Loud Neighbor wakes me up

You're sleeping peacefully, dreaming of something pleasant, when all of a sudden, you wake up to a "BBRRVVVVVOOMMMMMMMMM"

The hell was that??  You glanced at the clock and it's 5 in the morning on a Monday.

You look out the window, and see the neighbor's truck across the street idling.  Huh...they must have gotten that truck yesterday.  Oh great.....

Thankfully the idling isn't nearly as loud, and the engine isn't audible as the truck leaves the neighborhood.

But then...Tuesday morning rolls around...and at 5 in the morning...

 "BBRRVVVVVOOMMMMMMMMM"

Wednesday morning...

 "BBRRVVVVVOOMMMMMMMMM"

Thursday morning...

 "BBRRVVVVVOOMMMMMMMMM"

well... you get the idea.

What can be done?  This is happening to me.  I've used ear plugs before, but in the middle of the night there's a 50% that my hands would automatically pull off one or both ear plugs during sleeping.

I also have a white noise generator 1 feet from my head.  It blocks out 99% of the noise outside my room.  The 1% that gets through is a loud thunderstorm, and now, this truck.

Should I call the police?  I think that's rather extreme though.  I looked this up on Google and most advice is to politely ask the neighbor to change the muffler to a more quieter one.  If they refuse, then call the cops.  (But then, they'll most likely know who did it since they saw your face...and if they're evil, they'll rev the engine a few times at an earlier time just to piss you off)

Any other suggestions?

Call the cops, it's disturbing the peace and I think against the law to do such things early in the last morning

5am is the very earliest you can make loud noise via vehicles by law in most places.
if They suddenly starts revving the engine earlier than that, then that's easily a cop call worthy event.
But yeah I've found half the truck drivers to be reasonable and work with you.  the other half are tiny peen wielding snowflakes that can't believe you don't love the sound of a hemi engine.

They only stepped on the gas once this morning.  All the other times, they didn't.  They idle for about 2-3 minutes then leave.

And I'm in Texas, where everyone and their dog has a gun.  (except me lol)

So I'm scared of confronting anyone.

Uhhh, you ever think about, ya know... just, asking him not to do that.... ya know, talking?

Honestly, this Tribalism the Leftist Politics pushes needs to stop. Everyone just goes straight to crying to big daddy government over everything before even trying to fix it. It's like they want to pick a fight with the guy! >_<

Sucky situation and that guys an asshole mind you. Hope things work out!

realized I forgot to mention "...talking? or perhaps putting a letter in the mail box?"

Anyway I wanted to add another possible avenue you could use. Could always try a Lawyer letter to scare him down (though he'll know it's you and this is equally aggressive as calling the cops)  but you could also boost it with a trip to your Doctor. If you can get a Doctor Letter to cover that this is causing health issues from the lack of sleep... you could make a civil case if he doesn't desist the behavior.   I can't speak for your State, and I speak as an American on this. Most states do have civil code on this kind of thing. Some research might do some good. ^_^

Until that truck owner gets nasty about the fact his new toy is not appreciated by other "lazy people who should be up and getting ready for working instead of sleeping at 5am."

As someone who grew up in a rural redneck area, and was a redneck himself, you have NO IDEA how nasty people can be about even the most polite complaint about their bullshit.

This isn't politics, this is the question "are they dealing with a nasty vindictive asshole or a reasonable person"? If only they could know if they were going to be approaching a reasonable individual or not, and lets face it, the odds are NOT in their favor if they have a huge, loud, noisy truck...

No one wants that kind of conflict and thus their apprehension and ASKING if the appropriate way of handling it -IS- to let the "big daddy government" handle it (the police are not the government, btw)

Hopefully simply asking, or even the letter idea will work, but really, if it continues, external forces may be needed.  Time to look up the laws for your area, sometimes even calling the police station (not 911) can yield answers and lawful suggestions since they actually deal with these kinds of complaints all the time.

You're making a lot of assumptions about me that make no sense. What on Earth makes you think I have "no idea" how "nasty" people can be? o_O

Sooo because the chances are the person is not a reasonable person, it's better to assume he isn't and simply start a war with him. Gotcha. Interesting reasoning but hey, if you want to promote a war with the person, go ahead and call Big Daddy Government without a case and piss him off then. xD  I don't think you realize how nasty people can be.

"Hopefully simply asking, or even the letter idea will work, but really, if it continues, external forces may be needed."

Okay you are contradicting your post up to this point. I'm no longer certain how to respond. xD

"Time to look up the laws for your area, sometimes even calling the police station (not 911) can yield answers and lawful suggestions since they actually deal with these kinds of complaints all the time."

Actions I support and suggested. Granted I did not specify calling the Police and I would suggest doing the research properly since Police are in general pretty ignorant of law. Shouldn't be a shock because Police aren't Lawyers. xD

Ask them to change the muffler.

Ask your neighbors to ask them to change the muffler.

Look up who handles the local sound ordinances and call the bylaw officer or other approperiate enforcement officer. Round here regular police offices are not the ones handling this kinda thing.

If you want to bring any legial stuff into this your going to need to prepair.

1. If he's cranking it to leave his home even if it's a bit on the noisy side and he's not sitting there for more than say a a min or so to warm the truck and is only reving it 3 or 4 times and he's quiet otherwise your SOL and everyone will think your a snowflake.
(caveat) If it's a severely moded exost or damaged exost and he's super revving it.Then follow the following steps.)

2. Prep.
You want sound recordings from several locations taken at the same time (Clerefecation) [Mic inside room sound and timestamped  vid with sound will work a recorder outside someplace on your property NOT directly aimed at the truck directional mics amplify and can be used to say your targeting him. Finally if you can a recorder down the street.) times help allot but at least ONE of them needs a timestamp on it.) 3 or 4 times on separate days from the same locations.
Drive it home with one of those sound Db level apps and record the screen with another camera showing the levels in your room.

3.Look up all your sound ordenences Local. City. and state. and your zoning.
allso look up vehicle code. you may not need to direcktly confront him at all if you find a cop looking for a few quick tickets.
For this you want video/sound of him reving a good clear zoom up of special pipes on the truck.. and the licenses plate.
include his averige travel time and days he does it. might take a while but those tickets are strickt and they make you prove youve fixed it most of the time..

4. (using a lawer) Gather previous data in 1 2 and 3. Prosent your problem to the laywer he will probly want an hour or two time paid. Let HIM Talk to the police make alll calls and ensure that the noise maker is confronted.
you do not contact the police direcktly ... They think everyone is trying to sell drugs or other ilicet things and WILL try to but there heads so far up  your ass you'll Think there into unberthing.!!!

5. Under NO non threatening circumstances to your direct harm should you EVER call the police.... they will come out...
Then you will be under threat of harm it could simply be they find actuily doing there keep the pice job anoying or they have a stick up there but or you look like a mark or they rthink they can get an arrest easer poking at you rather than actually investigating.
This is why you use a lawyer to interact with them. protects your Anon status AND insures they actuily DO something.

Be safe ..
(and you dont need to go to court if you use a lawyer.  Lawyers are used all the time to mitigate contact with the popo for stuff like this.)

You'll get better results this way.....

Lastly..
If this person is nice ish you could just ask them not to revv in the morning it may just be how he gets going whenever he starts up the truck.

No problem...
As for cost there are programs to help you navagate the system that dont cost anything.

And not all lawyers are expansive to just fill out some forms and send them in.
i've had documents exct handled for as little as a half hr fee.  like 30 bucks depinds on the lawyer.

You don't know how to manipulate people, do you? I do! I sooooooo try hard not to abuse my powers!

Step 1. You get friendly with them first time around! Buy them beer and ask them to show them the engine rew!
Step 2. Give them compliments! Ask about the car! Show that you are a fan of it! Ask to be taken for a short ride, so you can experience the power and the sound!
Step 3. Tell them, that you weren't home until now, so maybe keep the noise down in the early hours, if they can, since you need to sleep until 6-7-8-ish A.M. OR during the ride, mention, that the engine is sort of loud, and hope it won't wake you up like EVER!

Even if they don't do that, you are chummy with them...seemingly. But apearing as a friend/buddy, and asking them such a minor favor, they will likely to make the sacrafice and rew their engine elsewhere. If this fails...Guns out! Or cops! Whatever humans do to solve their tiny problems! >:3

How weird situations like that work.
That guy with the loud truck seems to get away with it.
But if your radio is a little bit too loud, then you got the police knocking at your door.

If he rents, you might want to try complaining to his landlord if the police won't do anything.

I'm in Texas, and it seems there's only a law to keep your TV in your house noise level not too high.  They own a 2 story house.  I guess I can ask the HOA but eh.... >_>

I'll most likely just end up putting up with it.

I know how we used to take care of that shit in my old neighborhood.  Is he a gangster or just some flag-waving dipshit who got a big truck to compensate for his small chin?  With the gangster, moyomongoose got it right--you bring it to the landlord.  When landlords bitch, the cops hop to it, and usually they are after the gangster for something anyway.  With the chinlet you wreck his shit one way or another.  They are all cowards, so the moment they think that they are not as safe as they thought they were they leave.

It's not as bad here.  It's a nice middle class gated neighborhood with decent neighbors and families all around.  People walk their dogs/ jog every day/ families rides bikes around and wave to each other.

It's this ONE GUY that decided to buy this truck and be loud out of all the semi-quiet years I've lived here.  Also, hes the only guy that hosts a birthday/celebration party in the backyard with EXTRA LARGE SPEAKERS so the whole neighbor hood hears their mexican music/bad singing.

Thankfully the parties only happen once every few years.

I don't know.  I'm not good with confronting people, especially in Texas, where everyone has a gun.  I'd rather just put up with it and live without holes in my body.  >_>

My neighbours threw a loud party once a year too...I sort of can give them so much! Tho, at first time around, I've opened my windows and showed them my dominance, by blasting the whole album of every Silent Hill game. The kids were gone from the close vicinity of my windows...I wonder why??? Khm!Silent Hill OST - My HeavenKhm! This worked like a charm.

To my new neighbours, I played Iron Maiden songs like Futureal, Speed of Light, Final Frontier, Clansman, Fear of the Dark, etc. for 4 hours stright ONLY ONCE! They say good morning/day/afternoon first ever since! >XD

It's gated?  Yep, go to the landlord.  The whole neighborhood is owned by one ownership group, and they will not put up with anything that may possibly reduce property values.  If you could get some other people in the cul-du-sac to voice their complaints, then you can guarantee the revving will stop.  Landlords are massive tools as a rule, but this is one situation in which they are useful.

The first thing I'd look and see is what the noise ordinance is in your area. Usually they are like 10PM to 6 AM or something like that.

I get this sometimes with dogs barking. On some mornings when the weather is right I can hear them like they're right next to me.

Or y'konw just spend lots of money to put new windows in and replace the insulation in your walls with something that blocks noise better :V

I feel for you; in my circumstance, it was dogs barking.
I talked to them, and it got worse. So I got confrontational, and I realized they get high all day and I'm wasting my time.
It's just my experience, it may not be yours, but look up how to poison a truck~

There is no reason to gun a modern vehicle to get it to start. If you're in a residential neighborhood, maybe a polite anonymous note tucked under their wiper blade might do the trick. You'll know soon enough if they are going to go with the program or not. If not, then call the police. At least it's not like the one across the street here that has no muffler at all as near as I can tell. Rural area and the trains on the tracks nearby are almost as loud so it's not that big a deal to me.

I'd advise against the lawyer letter or anything else not anonymous if you're going to get aggressive. Rest assured, bringing down the hammer on someone is a sure-fire way to make an enemy, and they may get back in ways unrelated to truck noise (likely involving waking you up earlier), so it's best not to do that unless you know they're already your enemy. Maybe feel out who you're dealing with in a friendly manner without bringing up the issue, and if they seem stable/reasonable, make the request politely (and this is the key- make it sound like a favor that might get them a free case of beer down the road, not a demand. And keep in mind that changing the exhaust costs a good chunk of money, so if it's a custom exhaust or a beater pickup, you may be out of luck). If not, try the police, although I wouldn't expect luck if that's just the noise the truck makes on starting.

Ask them. If they don't react, complain to the landlord. I know it friggin sucks and probably can't be solved since they go to work or something, but doesn't hurt trying. I got my neighbors kicked out of the house when they kept moving furniture at 3 AM and EVERYTIME slammed the doors, giving me a heart attack.

Maybe you find more people annoyed by the noise.

I also have a neighbor that used to start his car every morning around 5 am and rev the engine loudly for a while. He has stopped, I wonder if someone threw a brick at him  ( ・ั (oo) ・ั )
