What the hell are you talking about? X3 Avengers has already grossed more than $200 million in its opening weekend. That's the largest opening weekend any movie has ever had. It's more than twice what any of the Transformers movies grossed in their opening weekend and half what the second one (the highest grossing movie of the three) took in overall. And that's just domestically! They don't need my $2 to make it more popular X3

I'm saving my money for Dark Shadows. I'm looking forward to the campy humor of it all X3

There's plenty of witty dialogue, genuinely funny scenes, as well as good dramatic and touching moments.

If you've ever watched anything by Joss Whedon and enjoyed it, this has his personal flavor all over it. If you don't care for his stuff (what kind of MONSTER are you), then pass on it. :B

I have absolutely no desire to see that movie.  Comic books are a waste of time.  Movies made from comic books even more so.
Wolfblade
11 years, 11 months ago
Please read the following with the tone of someone speaking calmly, and sincerely asking a question without any element of snark or sarcasm, because that is the tone I intend it to carry.

Why did you make this comment? If you overheard someone happily and excitedly talking about their upcoming wedding, would you pause to interject about how marriages serve no real purpose and are a hold-over from the time when women were property and originally served as a ceremony to bind a woman to a man's will? If someone was speaking about their love of science-fiction, would you step in to dismiss their interest because it is all unrealistic make-believe with little to no basis in actual scientific fact or even theory? Pick any  subject, any at all, where you personally do not have a fondness for it, and imagine you walk upon a conversation being held between several people who DO have a fondness for it. If it were in a real, live, social setting, would you feel compelled to insert yourself into that conversation JUST to have it be known that you have nothing but contempt for the topic of discussion these people are enjoying? Or would you simply walk on until you find people discussing something you do enjoy?

I am not singling you out personally, but I have simply never understood when someone does this. It strikes me as a form of tourette's. You see people expressing fondness for something you yourself dislike, and without thought on what you're doing or why, you HAVE to interject with nothing constructive or even neutral, but simply express "I strongly disagree."

It's not like it's a social or political discussion, where there are differing opinions based on varied perceptions of what are, at the core, measurably positive or negative behaviors/attitudes/policies/etc. It's simply taste/preference. People either like something or they don't, without any "right" or "wrong" side to be on.

You have absolutely no desire to see this movie. So why did you click this journal? Comic books are a waste of your time. Movies made from comic books even more so. But making sure other people know these things are beneath you, that's a meaningful and valid expenditure of your time?

Again: Do not read this as someone being smart-ass or snarky at you. I am, legitimately, sincerely, asking these questions because I would honestly very very much appreciate hearing the answer to them. Because I don't understand why these sorts of comments - complete dismissal and scorn of the topic without even a slim attempt at posing as actual discussion - are made.
Shokuji
11 years, 11 months ago

Wolfblade

Kota
11 years, 11 months ago
The comment was made in response to the the post of 'GO WATCH AVENGERS DAMMIT' and 'Just go watch it. Seriously.'  Comics are changed too frequently with story lines over played or something happening the previous continuity moot.  Movies change that even further to where the characters are the only things recognizable are the characters, if barely.  As for why I clicked on the journal I read every journal of those I watch unless it's asking for a pity party.
Wolfblade
11 years, 11 months ago
That doesn't really answer the questions.

I'm not asking "why don't you like comics?"

I'm asking "why jump into a conversation by people who like comic book movies just to say you don't like comic book movies?"

Picture in real life, a group of people talking about Star Wars. Then someone walks up to them JUST to say "Star Wars is a waste of time, it's stupid, I don't like it." What do you imagine happens next? The Star Wars fans realize oh crap, he's right? They convince him he's wrong and then he likes it? Or does it just make an awkward situation where the people who were having the conversation wonder why this guy is interrupting it that way?

Different analogy: You're on a furry site. You post some furry art, you make a comment, whatever, you're talking about furry stuff with other furries, then you get a comment "all this furry stuff is a waste of time. It doesn't interest me at all." Wouldn't you think it seems senseless for someone to bother commenting on a furry site in a furry conversation if he doesn't like furry?

The point is: all that accomplishes is throwing off a good vibe people were having discussing something they enjoy, for no reason, and makes the person who did it look like that must be WHY they did it.

What I was asking you was to give an alternative reason.
DorkyWolf
11 years, 11 months ago
Just a serious side note: Comics tend to give off the "overplayed factor" because are not MANY underlying stories similar? I mean, it's not like there are millions of ways heroes and villains can clash or something. The underlying story for them is "Hero saves the day from villain" or "Villain lays trap for hero and we don't know what's to happen till the next issue." But with different details in each series!
To further on your point, the movies are different for a reason as well! It's the director's take on the comic and how he wants to put it on screen. If we read the comics, what's the point of seeing the SAME EXACT thing on screen as well? It would be redundant. Changing it up is what brings in people. To see something familiar, but with a new twist based off one (wo)man's vision and take on the story. This is why Marvel and DC movies are so big! And continue to be - because the audience wants the new and the old together, and that's what they are getting. And "The Avengers" movie gave it to us, imho, perfectly!
otterguy
11 years, 11 months ago
I totally get what you're saying, and it's a big reason why I don't like comic books. I'm not going to just pick up the newest copy of Spiderman and start reading it, because I'll be lost after one issue.

But this movie is totally different. I only went in seeing "Thor", "Iron Man", and "Iron Man 2". But not seeing the rest of the movies had no impact on how I watched this one. All you need to know going in is this:

Thor is a Norse god with an adopted brother, Loki, who is a dick.
Iron Man is a rich prick.
When the Hulk gets mad he, well, hulks out.
Captain America was frozen in the 1940s and then thawed out. He was a soldier.
The guy with the eye patch is the head of a super secret government organization working with superheros. The white dude in the suit helps him out.

And that's all you need to know to enjoy this movie. My roommate only saw "Captain America", and he still dug the movie a ton. I don't know what you thought about "The Dark Knight", but "The Avengers" is kind of like that. I didn't see "Batman Begins", but the only effect that had was that I was a bit confused for the first ten minutes before the movie made sense and started kicking more ass than any film has the right to. This film too, will make sense pretty soon into the film, and after that you can enjoy the good acting, great writing, awesome special effects, and badass set pieces.

I highly, highly recommend it. If you can't afford to see it in 3d, at least watch it when it gets to the cheap theaters, because it has to be seen on the big screen.
Naki
11 years, 11 months ago
I have a feeling it's not going to be all that great.  It's mostly one of those movies for people who drool over all the Marvel characters.  Plus the only one out of all of them that I watched was Iron Man and it's mostly because that's the only one I would have liked.
Wolfblade
11 years, 11 months ago
If you liked Iron Man, you should enjoy this one.

If you didn't WATCH any of the others, you don't know whether you'd have liked them or not. I have always actively disliked the Hulk as a character, but the movie was so well done, I enjoyed it greatly (the last reboot, not that HIDEOUS horrible one just a few years before it). Thor was very "eh," not bad, not great, pretty solidly par. Captain America was, I feel, nearly as good as the first Iron Man.

If you simply aren't interested in comic book movies, or any of the characters at all, then yeah, probably not much reason for you to go see it. But if you liked Iron Man, you probably would like this one too.
Naki

Wolfblade
11 years, 11 months ago
Hated him. :/

He was terrible. I loved how Edward Norton did the character. He was great. Bruce Banner is supposed to be tormented, on edge, even when he's in control, he knows how easily he could lose that control. Ruffalo didn't seem stressed or on edge at all, just really socially awkward. Whatever he was going for, he didn't hit it.

I did love the LINE he gave just before hulking out for the big battle, but even then, his delivery was lacking.

Everyone else was phenomenal.
Shokuji
11 years, 11 months ago
Edward did a good job, but at the same time this is later in the timeline and Bruce gets a little more of the hulk in him (body/face) and they couldn't have someone too skinny? Just a guess.

I thought the new guy did an OK job, but a better job could have been done.

Spider-man is an Honorary Avenger, but I don't think he's ever really been part of the main team for a real length of time. More than that though, Sony still has the movie rights to Spider-man, so he couldn't cross over into the Marvel movies until they get those back.

Disney bought Marvel for over 4 billion dollars: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Comics

Just checked further and found that Disney won't change anything major:
" On December 31, 2009, Disney acquired Marvel Entertainment, Inc. for $4.24 billion. Disney has stated that their acquisition of the company will not affect Marvel's products, neither will the nature of any Marvel characters be transformed

Wolfblade
11 years, 11 months ago
RENT THEM FIRST.

At least Iron Man and Captain America. Thor was okay, but not really required viewing, although it does give all the backstory for Loki. And if you watch the Hulk one (which was excellent too, but the least necessary to watch first, and they did re-cast him for Avengers - did not like the recasting), make sure it was the Edward Norton one, not the one just before it. That one was terrible.

I think Avengers is MUCH better for having seen the individual characters' movies first, but would still be totally awesome completely standing alone. If you do think it looks awesome, it's worth it to see the separate movies first.
VoodooKitty
11 years, 11 months ago
Oh how I want to rant against that hulk. But I don't want to say anything that might be spoilers...

Also...Being set in New York and all, where the hell were Spider Man and the Fantastic 4 and all the other newyork based super heroes while this was going on? Did they get sucked into the Ghostbuster universe by Gozer or something?

I'm going to disagree with Wolfblade. I went into this only seeing three of the Marvel movies ("Thor" and the two "Iron Man" films). My roommate only saw "Captain America". We still knew what was going on after a few minutes and loved every second of the film.

If one of those movies looks good to you, see it. If not, don't worry, because skipping it will not ruin your enjoyment of "The Avengers".
Wolfblade
11 years, 11 months ago
Well, I did say the movie would be awesome on its own, I just felt like I enjoyed it more for having seen more of the characters beforehand. Seeing the others isn't REQUIRED, but they are all good movies on their own as well, and it can only enhance the experience of the Avengers.
Wolfblade
11 years, 11 months ago
Oh, there's also kindof a big pivotal plot point in Avengers that just has more impact if you've seen all the movies, which I can't really be specific about without hinting at a spoiler. X3

Usually it is very hard for me to be satisfied for actually paying to go see a movie considering how much some places charge you. It's not a "good comic book movie" or a "good superhero movie". It's just a damn fine movie. Smartly written, brilliantly choreographed -- it's great. Folks who are avoiding it due to some weird aversion to 'silly comic book movies' are just leaving more seat space for me and my friends.

Sometimes I think people snark here just to see a big reaction... but yeah... It's really THAT good? -.o Been hearing a crapload of hype for this movie just like when Watchmen came out. I was never a big fan of superhero stuff to begin with but i haven't seen an adaptation yet i haven't liked or downright hated. They've actually gotten me more interested in the genre. I guess there isn't much nostalgia to murk when you've barely read the marvel comics back in the day. Valiant comics were the shit though! :P

Awright, awright! I'm goin' already... Damn! (And fuck bayformers. Bumblebee was a VW Bug. All else is blasphemy, regardless of how many pieces of silver the auto industry kicked down.)

Actually it wasn't that Chevy threw down silver to get Bumblebee as a camaro, so much as VW adamantly denying them the use of the bug anymore. The company does not wish their products to be associated with war or war-like products (being a German company and all and the cultural sensitivity they have to that). So Bee as a bug wasn't on the table. Of course, I'd have preferred they just switch him to a Cooper Mini or other similar car like that (like the classics/generations toy), and keep the general character's personality, but then just about the only characters who've had any effort at all to preserve their original personalities have been Optimus, Megs, and Starscream.

Wow. Once again, I need to know more than I do before hitting the keyboard. It seems inconceivable to me that VW would pass up that kind of publicity bonanza. Could be I'm not all that savvy, but I just don't see the downside. (I could see them not wanting to PAY to have Bumblebee remain a Bug, but forbidding it outright? I don't get it.)

PUNY GOD!

Oh, and Tony Stark's character is brilliant here! With all these other characters to interact with, his personality is more harsh, sarcastic and spitefully cynical... I LOVE IT!!!
