Turns out I may have genuine claustrophilia

First of all, despite the "philia" part, it's not actually an adult activity thing.

That's a mistake that almost everyone makes.

Claustrophilia is being more comfortable in enclosed spaces than open spaces.

That doesn't mean I like being tied up or held captive, as the internet seems to have interpreted it.

I still like to retain my freedom and a large degree of freedom of movement.

That's kinda what made me think I can't have claustrophilia, because every source that's readily available said that's what it's about.

Turns out popular culture has put its own spin on the medical condition by elaborating some of the facts for dramatic effect.

Claustrophiliacs don't like to be physically restrained or unable to move their limb freely.

The individuals that do have another condition that's not the same thing.

Being trapped is removing your ability and trusting others to handle it.

Being in a small space is being aware of your entire environment at once to monitor for danger.

These are two completely unrelated things.

Essentially they are polar opposites of conrol and trust.

On researching ACTUAL medical documentation on the subject it seems I ticked all the boxes.

One thing that all the documentations tell me to look out for is hoarding.

Claustrophiles you see are known to be extreme hoarders.

Essentially they build a fort around themselves out of household items, kinda like how kids make sofa cushion forts.

They feel uncomfortable in their own home as the walls are too far away from each other.

Therefore they build stacks of items to bring the walls closer to the center and shut themselves in.

I myself have found me making this kind of thing by some unknown instinct myself.

I have a ot of clutter that i keep just so i have less space to myself.

However, the solution is mind bogglingly simple it seems.

I should make walls from empty cardboard boxes, which are much easier to move and clean than piles of stuff.

I can just push the wall out of the way to clear some space when needed and then draw it back to a tunnel when i need my me time.

This means I can get rid of things I don't use and still don't feel uncomfortable in the open space.

If I need to clean my room i can simply take the cardboard out of my room, clean the space and then put it back.

Also, as it's cardboard, it's easy to replace so it doesn't matter if it gets damaged or stained.

You can even put wallpaper on it and posters.

It's something I'd certainly like to try out, maybe just for fun at first.

A little cardboard fortress I can fold away when i need to manage the space and slide back out again when i want to be cozy.

What a ridiculously simple solution.

I feel so stupid that I didn't think of it myself.
