Making a new visual novel. Yeah, I'm making 2 at once.

on Power-Prey which is good but I think I still want to try different kinds of visual novel stuff.

I was looking at the Do No Harm series and figured I could use that engine. Don't want it to be a game in the DNH series though.

The idea is that it will play kinda like the Text Adventure games on FurAffinity but during scenes you'll get multiple choice responses to dialogue.

There's a handful of races each with different skills but I haven't finalized it yet. The names are based on mythological creatures but the creatures aren't like them. I think I'll just name the characters after the mythological creatures rather than the races.

Bear (Callisto)
Beaver (Capa)
Bee (Medusala)
Beetle (Khepri)
Butterfly (Choukeshin)
Centipede (Oomukade)
Crab (Karkinos)
Eagle (Roc)
Elephant (Airavata)
Fish (Namazu)
Fly (Creeper)
Frog (Heqet)
Goat (Puca)
Horse (Kelpie)
Lion (Nemean)
Monkey (Wukong)
Otter (Eda)
Pig (Ngepet)
Rabbit (Bijou)
Scorpion (Scorpio)
Snail (Carcolh)
Snake (Naga)
Spider (Uttu)
Squid (Kraken)
Squirrel (Ratatoskr)
Turtle (Akupara)
Wolf (Dacian)
Worm (Efor)

The only ones people might have difficulty finding here are Efor and Eda.

-

Efor are also known as Ethers, Keukegen or Wisps and are technically ghosts that can take the form of crude oil, blood, soot, ink or clay mud.

They bring dirt with them and mold so people don't generally want them in their houses.

However, if you anger them by trying to scare them away or building your house where they live they will transform into different monstrous creatures or give you visions of terrible things such as your own death, the death of a family member or your riches being lost to scare you into leaving the area.

Oddly, despite the fact they are very good at scaring people they are for the most part harmless though sometimes can carry diseases an unintentionally make people ill.

They often leave black slimy secretions behind that can either be made into medicine or used as good fertilizer. Mushrooms that grow from slime covered soil can also attract other spirits which depending on the location can be a good or bad thing as some spirits can be beneficial by granting good harvests or riches whereas other spirits are mischievous sometimes to the point of endangering people's lives.

Naga in particular have the art of using Ethers to extract life force and grant to others to heal illness or curses. Of course they can also use this to give people illness or a curse.

Charms or Magatama are said to be imbued with the essence of an Ether to grant people good luck or more specifically protection because people who are kind to Ethers sometimes have Ethers come to their aid when they are in danger by scaring away their attacker or evil spirits that might do them harm.

Ethers are said to be pretty simple creatures mentally. They are more akin to a wild animal than sentient but they can sense fear, other spirits and malicious intent.

Choukeshin and other insect spirits are often seen around Ethers along with slug and fungus spirits. Choukeshin in particular when Ethers are acting as lanterns for Eda. Ethers are sometimes mistook for Choukeshin.

-

Eda which are also known as Selkies, Otr or Itachi are martens, weasels, otters, raccoon dogs or foxes that live in the forest and often act as mediators between the mortal and spirit realms.

Said to playful they are prone to mischief especially where humans are concerned however their pranks are harmless and normally involve scaring humans by transforming into a terrifying sight of some sort.

Eda often keep to themselves and stay far away from humans but often when humans enter their territory they scare them away.

Not all Eta are bad however as some are curious about humans and even transform so they can live alongside humans or even disguised as humans within a human village.

Eta are said to be fantastic swimmers despite making the forest their home and have the ability to magically heal wounds.

Eta sometimes give their identity away when healing critically injured people or the fact they must return to water to give birth.

Eta are also known to have a beautiful signing voice which can sometimes by accident lead humans to dangerous areas in their pursuit of the beautiful music, often because Eta tend to sing whilst swimming in dead water.

In some beliefs humans have made allies with wild eta by collecting shellfish and leaving them as offerings. Eta are high ranking in the spirit world despite living off the land so sometimes acts of kindness towards them has encouraged them to speak on humanity's behalf to encourage other spirits of the forest to be kind to humans.

For that reason destruction of the forest has also lead more malicious spirits to act on the Eda's behalf often without the Eda's consent to remove the invasive humans by any means necessary including via mass killings.

Eda can sometimes be seen with Ethers in the form of a floating ball of fire especially in long lines. Eda often keep Ethers as pets and like to practice transformation with each other as a form of play.

that's another obscure one.

Kek AKA Snealk, Creepers, Crawlers, Mimimushi, Hari Onago, Futakuchi Onna or Kejourou are mosquito-like flies that can open up passageways between the land of the living and the fairy realm if given an offering of blood. However the blood must be given willingly or the kek will instead take blood from the person offering it.

The blood giver temporarily gains the ability to traverse between the land of the living and the fairy world but with the possible risk of allowing others to do so including malicious entities.

Even if these entities pose no risk to the blood-giver being far too eager to escape into the other realm to care about the person who opened the door, the after effects of their malicious acts can some cause trouble for the blood-giver either by proxy or in retaliation for what the malicious individual has done.

The kek itself spends its childhood as a water-dwelling worm-like creature similar to a leech or horsehair worm. People foolish enough to enter water where adult kek can be found run the risk of the worm latching itself onto them as a parasite.

The kek parasite or multiple kek parasites can live happily hidden among the hair of the victim sapping nutrients from the person's body without causing any ill effects other than an increased appetite. However the worm-like creature often causes a transformation in the victim which can be upsetting for the family to witness.

People infested with the parasite can develop bloated bellies and lose some intelligence making them act more like an animal crawling around on all fours. However after the parasite has grown to maturity it will simply lead the victim to lakes or streams where it will happily leave and the victim will return to normal over a few days.

Kek victims have superhuman strength and healing abilities and these are often instantaneous in the victim even though the full transformation can take several days. This can be an early warning sign that the individual is infected, especially as the victim themselves is often unaware of the fact.

Kek victims are quite warm and loving with their personality being compared to that of a dog but they can be vicious if attacked or if a loved one of the victim is attacked. This is true whether or not the victim shared these personality traits.

Due to the nature of the kek's adult abilities they are often much liked by spirits and sometimes people who've looked after their loved ones during the hideous transformation have received blessing by spirits or had malicious spirits warded away lifting curses on villages that the inhabitants are sometimes unaware was caused by malicious spirits.

Some relatives or friends of the victim might be so disturbed by the transformation that they seek help from priests but this is ill advised. Often priests might attempt to exorcise the kek which will give the victim an instant recovery but the victim will die within a few days.

Wandering apprentice priests are often unaware of the dangers since they move on before the victim dies. Similarly corrupt priests will offer the exorcism in exchange for money and move on before the victim dies so they don't get caught.

Medicine women and experienced priests who are not corrupt know not to interfere with the kek and reassure the family of the victim that given time everything will be okay. Obviously for some people this isn't good enough and they use more drastic or invasive methods that put the victim at risk.

The most common name for them is kek or some variant like kekke. Both the names kek and snealk are onomatopoeic of the sound or motion of crawling or slithering like insects, caterpillars, worms, lizards, snakes, seals, etc or the sound or motion of swimming in water or swallowing.

In tradition fishermen who catch fish with leeches or lamprey attached to them would toss the fish back into the water whilst its still alive to show the spirit realm that they mean no harm by sparing the kek parasite.
