An Idear - Porn Parody (VN)

So, I've been thinking and researching and drafting a bit.

A visual novel porn parody featuring my favorite little kittens the Wilytwins?

My head has been churning with the idea for a couple weeks now, almost a month. This idea kinda came about from playing Unteralterbach and a few other Visual Novel games that I've come across. I thought the twins would be perfect because as a player you could choose either one Kat (male) or Kit (female) to role(play) around as. Then I remembered there were a couple episodes that featured Tookit that make a perfect scenario for shenanigans like this.

Recently I was able to dig into how I can get the general framework of a VN using something like RenPy to make it easier so I don't put too much work on myself. On the other hand, I am also capable of programming this kind of thing from scratch.

What I lack, however, is creatively making good character dialogue, music, and making backgrounds... Pretty huge features. I make up for this in the fact I can program, draw, and come up with good ideas for game play features and storyboarding outlines.

What I wonder is if this would be worth it? Would it draw enough interest?

Hmm... RenPy? For a *very* bare bones Visual Novel it's probably fine. Anything slightly more advanced, and I'd recommend switching over to something like Nscripter.

I previously had issues with developing a game in RenPy (both game performance, and overall filesize), and after doing some reading, I quickly switched over to the older engine. The distribution file for a basic tech demo should *not* be a 40MB download! That's nuts.

My new demo is only 10MB for the work copy, and 4MB when packaged for distribution.
Functionally, it's identical to my older RenPy demo. So, that says a lot.

In case you're curious, my project is a first-person dungeon crawler, mixing Dungeon Master's exploration, with Punch-Out's combat.

I coded this custom speech engine, with animated portraits and text-beep from scratch, in only two days (human warning): https://flic.kr/p/26FRCaJ
(This video is also a little older than what I currently have, progress-wise.)

Cool, I'll have to check it out sometime. I kinda figured that something like RenPy might be bloated. I'd prefer to code in something like C++.

Thanks for the advice.

No problem.

Nscripter uses a bytecode system, with the syntax halfway between Assembly and BASIC, so it's very easy to use.

It also has a surprising amount of console ports, from developers! Since the main executable can easily be swapped out for another one.

Just a word of warning: "saveoff" should be your first line of code. Because the file-logging can cause some lag.
(Just have "saveon savegame %file_index saveoff" for your main save block, and you're good.)

For most visual novels, it's not really noticeable, but if you're getting fancy with visual effects, it's a necessary step.

I recently started coding a Sonic physics engine, in Nscripter, because I can! :P

Well, music is obvious... just play the 80's thundercats theme on loop endlessly.

LOL. I'm sure that wouldn't get too annoying, huh?

That would be quite a lot of work, but I would love to see it.

Indeed.

You could always put out a request for volunteers for the parts you don't feel you can do yourself.
