I got a threatening letter from someone claiming to be Leo Burnett so to be safe I might have to alter my appearance. A change of color or maybe buy into the furry fandom. I'm not decide. Got ideas?
As for my own fursona / avatar, I created it in 1994, then registered it with the U.S. Copyright Office, back during the time before I even knew the fandom existed...Thus I would think that problem for me would be highly unlikely.

Have you checked who Leo Burnett is? It is one of the world's largest worldwide advertising corporations...I'd say the odds of small-time furry artists like us being contacted by such a company would be as unlikely as any of us getting a letter from President Trump, or from Pope Francis.
Plus...If it were for real, that letter would have came from one of their attorneys they keep on retainer.

I see...Their icon is orange, your icon is purple. I've once heard it said if you change something different, it is not an infringement...I guess it takes more than simply changing the colour to be counted as "different".
This is a reason, but not the main reason, I create my own characters from scratch. As for my main reason, I like that sense of pride of my characters being my unique characters that I created. Even if I was allowed to use commercially created characters, I would still want to have my own characters.
Out of all my artwork I've posted, the only characters I recall that are not mine are: The results of gift exchanges with other artists (Secret Santa, etc).
