Kittery: I wanna tell a story about every part of sexuality, not just the marketable parts. >:3 While that might seem like just an excuse to write a bunch of porn for my extreme fetishes, it's also the other way around! I couldn't tell this story without life experience as a person with extreme fetishes. Paraphore had to be a game for that reason; no one wants to sift through a word doc for the parts that won't scar them.
Right now the balance between mostly-vanilla and mostly-fucked-up-overboard-shit is pretty good, but wherever the game goes my guiding principle is to tell the story I want to tell and keep the ratio equal.
Fallow: I want to help Kittery tell his story. Also, I'm generally interested in game development and I'm exploring unstudied procedural play.
Would you ever train your urethra as a fuckhole?
Fallow: No.
Kittery: Maybe~
Is there any fetish you won't add?
Is there any kink that won't be in this game?
Kittery: I'm staying away from controversial offshoots of degradation like intelligence play, raceplay, and transplay, which could legitimately hurt groups of people, unlike "controversial" fetishes which really just happen to be ultraviolent, cruel, or gross. Because I'm a gay dude I feel comfortable writing degradation scenes with femboy-bashing and the word "faggot," though there aren't many like that in the game just yet.
Fallow: This is more of a Kittery question, but from a technical standpoint, we won't be adding anything that would violate the laws of the host's origin country, or the host's terms of service.
In fact, the game has a system to automatically censor such content. For example, despite the abundance of cub, we just recently posted the game to FurAffinity. When played from FA servers, cub content is censored.
Kittery: It exists in-universe as a floating warning above your head! Cub characters comment on it and hold themselves back from approaching you.
Fallow: When human content arrives we'll do a similar thing for Inkbunny, etc. It doesn't matter which site, save game files are universal, so if you start playing on FA and want to see cub stuff, or keep accidentally clicking on cub stuff and want to remove the option entirely, you can simply migrate your save file to the site you like best or download the game and play it locally. We may even censor local versions depending on your country's laws.
Moar cuddly cute otters plz
Fallow: No.
Kittery: Yes!!!!
What area will be the most (as Mynt puts it) hardcore?
Kittery: Probably Junk City. Though Violet Meteorite, the new area coming soon, will aim to feature a big wide range of kinks, potentially including stuff as hardcore as the City. :3
What software and language(s) are you using to make this game?
Fallow:HaxeFlixel on OpenFL in Haxe. Right now the bulk of the game is wrapped up in a pseudo-JavaScript language running a custom API I built for it, interpreted at runtime. Although I'm currently in the process of converting it all into procedural functions in Haxe. I highly recommend this for people who want to build Flash applications but don't want to use ActionScript.
As for software, we're of course using the Haxe compiler. Otherwise I run Arch Linux x64 and use a highly customized verion of vim for text editing along with unix core utils for the rest of my work. I run everything in the i3 window manager in a single Xfce4 terminal window inside tmux, often remotely with ssh.
I use a throw-away Windows 8.1 machine to run the asset builder that mostly relies on Photoshop, a custom Adobe ExtendScript, and TexturePacker. We sync everything with nested git repositories and Dropbox as backup.
Let me know if you'd like me to go into more detail about the configuration. It's highly custom.
Kittery: My language of choice is English. The syntax and quirks of other languages are just so foreign to me. I write on my old MacBook Air with Sublime Text 3.
hello
Fallow: No.
Kittery: Hiii~! :3
Will hotkeys be added?
Kittery: We're planning on mapping 1, 2, 3 or Q, W, E etc to the choices. Besides that, maybe spacebar for the compass button, Esc to open the Mynt screen? Not very high priority but it would be good QoL.
Fallow: Yes, they'll probably be in a 0.1.4 dev version, although no promises.
How do you do the writing so good?
Kittery: Well shucks, you made me smile big. Brace yourself for a way-too-detailed answer.
My writing process involves shitting out a long ramble of words and then deleting and rewriting over and over until I finally get as close as I can to the core of what I was trying to say with the original mess. As you might've noticed I like using the momentum of longer comma-less sentences a lot too. Though sometimes short is best.
Here's an example of my editing process with a two-sentence thing I just shit out:
Howie went to the market and on the way a dog tried to bite his leg off. He kicked out at the mangy, furry, snarling thing and connected right on the tummy.
It's okay, but definitely not good.
Howie went to the market andOn the way to the market a dogchihuahua tried to bite hisHowie's leg off. He kicked out at the mangy, furry, snarling thing and connected right on the mangy little shit in her tummy.
"Howie went to the market" misleads the reader for a moment. He never actually got to the market.
Usually I bog everything down with detail, but "a dog" isn't detailed enough. Gotta specify. "Rottweiler" or "pitbull" come to mind first, both equally boring. Now "chihuahua", that's good. >:3
"out at" is a lot like saying "under beneath." Toss em out.
"mangy, furry, snarling thing" is doing so much wrong that I gotta break it down into steps. Christ.
1. Sometimes a word's connotations will fuck up the effect I'm going for. Mangy and snarling do their job describing this vicious little shit, but "furry" has soft, lovable connotations, especially since I changed "dog" to "chihuahua." Even if the dog IS furry it doesn't help paint the picture I want.
"mangy, snarling thing"
2. "thing" has the same problem "a dog" did. If a word isn't clarifying or describing, I excise that motherfucker. How about "little shit."
"mangy, snarling little shit"
3. This is passable, but even one meh word is too many when I'm trying to write quick action. "Snarling" is attempting to do the job "tried to bite his leg off" already did.
Now I can drop "connected right on the" since the sentence has been rejiggered. To stitch things back up and throw in a nugget of detail I'll use "in her tummy."
On the way to the market a chihuahua tried to bite Howie's leg off. He kicked the mangy little shit in her tummy.
I cut about 9 words. 32 --> 23. Doesn't seem like much, but that's 30%! When I apply that to a several-thousand word ramble it saves readers a lot of slog, hopefully.
tl;dr I write a lot at once and then go through and yank out all the redundancies and boring words and unclear/misleading things.
Fallow: I'm incapable of creative writing.
What is your favourite super hard kink and why is it consensual hand holding?
Kittery: BABY MURDER!!!!!!! 3:<
Fallow: Not going to say, probably the only relevant question I won't answer right now.
Where do you like to take it?
Kittery: Ze throat~ I especially love it when dicks get pounded so hard down my esophagus that I end up gagging and drooling all over their bouncing nuts. c:
Fallow: This is too similar to the "favourite kink" question for me.
By any chance would we get a collection minigame, like I dunno... panties and dildos?
Kittery: The item system is sort of a collection minigame as it is, but I assume you mean stealing panties from every major female/futa/femboy/panties-wearing character or something like that? :3c Sounds dope~
Fallow: It would have to stand out from regular item collection, I'm not sure how.
Do you expect this game to get as big content-wise as Fenoxo's CoC?
Fallow: It's hard to quantify content size, but from decompiling both games and comparing the sizes without assets, our game seems to have about 5% of the "content" that CoC has, as measursed by byte entropy.
But CoC relies a lot more on interlocked systems like combat and customization, whereas our game is a more controlled, divergent story. It's hard to compare. How does a combat system measure up to a complex tree of choices? CoC is definitely bigger right now, it's just that even if we could compare the raw word count and asset count, we still couldn't account for the systemic content differences between the games.
I can say that we'll continue with these big content patches as long as we're supported, with no real limit to the amount we'll add; even when the game has an official "ending" content will still get added. We'll continue to improve Paraphore until there is nothing left to improve on.
When will it be finished sorry I'm an idiot.
Kittery: Hard to say. If we keep this pace up I can probably wrap up the "main story" in a year or so but really the system could support a loooot more content before load times get ridiculous, so the world could keep expanding around it forever~
Fallow: The engine can expand massively in any direction. I'm just following Kittery along, as well as throwing in my own experimental gameplay.
Does Roxelle have a pussy? When she's referred to as "futa" it suggests that she does, but there hasn't been any mention of cow cooter in the game.
Kittery: I use "herm" when I refer to cunt+cock+boobs and "futa" when it's just cock+boobs. That said, cow cooter will be coming in some form or another eventually~
Fallow: Assuming you mean Futanari, then Kittery is correct in his terminology.
What species is the player? Does it vary depending on whether you pick a name that's already programmed in, or is it just open to interpretation? I'd love to have a big thick dogcock and knot some bitches. :3
Kittery: Right now your name doesn't affect anything past the intro, sadly. Species selection might be a thing eventually but for now the player character sitting at the in-game monitor is a human, and the Player actually walking talking and fucking things is a generic grey-skin humanoid, if that makes sense! :>
Fallow: As Kitt implied, the game is a simulation of a game. You are playing as a human playing as a humanoid. That humanoid might change in future updates.
How old are u?
Fallow: 22.
Kittery: 21 and three quarters!
How often do you plan to update?
Kittery: Roughly once a month, though if we get a sudden burst of Patreon donors we might have to bump that up to 1.5 months.
Fallow: As much as is reasonable, with the lower limit on once per month.
Does it work for mobile devices because I don't see anything but white.
Fallow: No, Flash games don't work on mobile. I can compile it as HTLM5+js or webgl+js, but frustratingly there's not a furry website on the planet that will host HTML5 content. We're considering buying a domain and setting it up there soon.
How much pets can get? And tank you for the game.
Kittery: Just the one for now. :3
What does "Paraphore" exactly mean?
Kittery: It's a made-up word. The prefix para- means "beyond/above" and the suffix -phore means "bearer of." So a Paraphore would be a BEARER OF THE BEYOND (so mysterious!!!)
Sodazel would like to know, might we get a chance to romance Mynt?
Kittery: This is in the works, though it may not come in the form you expect~ ;3
Specific Kinks
Can we have an option to get STD infected as the player? pls o^o
Kittery: This is a cute idea :3c We'd probably do this on some sort of player traits screen, maybe one that folds out with the Junk and Roam and Act menus. Can't promise that it would affect the story much but it would be super easy to record and display little details like that. The only problem is where to put em!
Fallow: It's possible, although I wouldn't want to add it as just a token concept, I'd have to think hard about how that would work in the engine. Of course if someone wanted to commission a scene like that on Patreon, we'd have to figure it out quick. Wink wink.
Will the next updates feature more impregnation and more cubs that can be affected by the Pastel Ring? ^^
Kittery: Now that I've finally made a kink symbol for pregnancy, yes. :3 This question came in before the 0.1.3 public release— you'll find a preggo dragon outside the Snagglebank and a dog couple who get preggo at the Floatillery now!
As for cubs, I'm actually going to try and cut down a bit, at least for a release or two. As much as I love the kink there's an awful lot of cub in the game right now, and more coming with what I've seen so far of this next commission batch, and more coming with the pet game, so I'm going to try to flesh out some of the other kinks like gore, softer stuff (bondage?!), and hyper!
Fallow: What he said, although rings are designed such that there will be multiple of them and they will continue to see use in the future.
Are any new scat stories planned, perhaps with art to accompany them?
Kittery: Yes, scat is a triple whammy— very popular among kinky players, one of my favorite fetishes, and also criminally rare! For scat fans, for me, and for the diversity of porn itself, I vow to do more and add art of it whenever possible >:3
Will you be adding any CBT/castration stuff in?
Kittery: Eventually yes! I haven't done any yet because it's pretty lukewarm to me compared to other fetishes. But it's worth doing!
Fallow: Yes.
Will there be any actual penetration with genitals done to the player?
Kittery: There's an assfuck scene with Rox after she's at the Floatillery~ But yes, not enough of this. I'll do more!
Will cub scenes be get dirty art or possible animation?
Fallow: Yes, in fact there are multiple cub animations in the game right now, the asset pipeline has been refined so there should be a lot more soon.
Kittery: Initially we considered keeping the art and animation 18+, but the pet minigame changed things, so... yeah, more coming probably!
Holy shit, are you really that young? When I was your age I was a useless bum and getting worse since then. Mad kudos for getting this shitload of work done, I find it really enjoyable.

Actually, there is an app that will allow you to run this on mobile. It is called Photon Browser, and, albeit badly, it can run games like Paraphore. I know because that is kinda the only way I can play.

Interesting, I'd expect you'd need quite a fast tablet to run the game in that browser as the game is not at all optimized for an ARM processor.
I've gotten a lot of feedback for mobile recently, I'm currently in the middle of a big refactor, but once I'm done with I'll make mobile vs HTML5 or native app a priority.

Well actually, the app makes it so the device you are using is a pseudo computer. My tablet is not very powerful or fast but it can still play basic flash games using the app. As long as you don't run multiple windows then it works fine.

was curious if you'd consider writing a story about that hyena family in the city or will there be more in the game itself? That section was really fun

Huge vote in favor of an HTML5 or webgl version of Paraphore on its own domain- that would be fantastic, if the budget can be worked out! Would make it a lot easier to keep tabs on the game's development, too, since I don't need to rely on "remember to check inkbunny". :)
(also you're both slightly younger than me and making me feel inadequate, knock it off*)

Gotcha :3 Yes, Fallow is sniffing hard in the direction of paraphore.com available on mobile and how to get there quickest and easiest as we speak! Until then, if you wanna play the game on mobile, try using Photon Browser like Genericuser003 said above c: We heard that works pretty decently~
And psh, you're never too old to make a dank thing on the internet! :x

Not even just mobile, Flash doesn't play too well on my browser nowadays- crashes a lot, and Chrome is dropping entirely in the future. Crazy that Inkbunny doesn't allow you to upload HTML5, though- I can only imagine that would make it easier to develop, too, though I've never touched Flash and only barely dipped my toes into web programming at all.

The trouble is "just upload HTML5" really means "embed an arbitrary web page"… one which likely references a variety of scripts and image assets which also need hosting. It's a different model to "upload an file, point to that file". For stories we read the file, but it's still one file.
Conversely, if we go the route of just putting arbitrary websites into a frame, we get into "what is at that URL?", submissions which aren't consistently available or disappear over time - and it you're also providing less of a service, just a place for people to comment and +fav it. [Though this might still be a useful option.]
That doesn't mean we can't or won't do it; we just have to spend a while thinking about what we want to offer, and how - as well as whether it makes sense when dedicated game-hosting sites are already doing it a lot better than we would.

ha, one week later I finally notice this- yeah, that does make sense now that I think about it- I basically know nothing about web dev but I see where you're coming from with that- and I can definitely imagine how some, uh, bad shit could happen if you just started allowing people to embed whatever they want in an iframe or something. I'm glad, at least, you're looking into it- this (admittedly mostly a silent lurker) user would appreciate having it if there's any way it can work!

Two weeks later I'm just now reading this, JavaScript minifiers have been around for a while now. We can compress the images into base64, and pack everything into a single html file to be displayed in a sandboxed iframe. It's not the most compatible solution, but it works and is relatively simple to implement.

To clarify, you can either let the user upload a zip file containing a web app, the automatically crunch it into a single file or known file structure. This is liable to cause errors as JS standards fluctuate and crunchers fail in some situations. Or you could force the user to the this beforehand and upload a single html file, which you could treat like an swf and simply display in an iframe. That method puts more work on the user to ensure the game works correctly, but I feel like most JS devs know how to do this.
Otherwise, the way Newgrounds and some other portals do this, is they simply let you upload a zip file, then extract it into a directory and point an iframe to the index.html. That will generally yield the best results, although I'm unsure of technical challenges in doing that.
Please let me know if you need implementation help, I'd very much like html5 support.
