A few fun updates

We just ran a mini update to add a few really important features and changes. This is just a quick note about what they were. A full official update journal will come later.

We have a new Live Site Notice announcement system. Anyone with IB site pages open will receive an instant notice at the top of the screen if we have any extremely important messages. This message loads without you having to reload the page and it will pop up instantly any time a new critical announcement is made.

It will be used mainly when you are likely to lose work/comments (due to the site going offline) or an immediate security issue that may effect your account. It will not be used to announce regular site journals (like this one). The site notice pointing to this journal is just a test. :P

We have also added a way to restrict access to your account by an IP or IP range. This is for advanced/technically-minded users only. It is a powerful security feature that allows you to control what IP addresses are permitted to log on to your account and to make requests using your session id. This gives our site a massive boost in security. Any account protected by an IP range limit will be much much harder to compromise by password guesses, cookie theft and all the usual direct account attacks. An attacker could only perform those attacks from your allowed IP addresses. All admin/mod accounts are now protected by these IP limits.

Note that these IP ranges are not yet IPv6 compatible. Hopefully we can add that shortly!

To set up the IP access control for your account, click the Account option in the menu and choose IP Range.

Lastly we have changed (again) how Notice removal works on the Notices page. The previous method made you wait for each removal, which slowed things down if your connection wasn't superfast. Now we allow the Notices to be removed instantly from the page (like they used to) but we have a loading icon telling you that the removals haven't been saved back to the server.

That's the short story for today's updates! Full details will come later.

As always, let us know if anything goes horribly wrong. :P

Update: IP ranges are not yet IPv6 compatible. Hopefully we can add that shortly!

Repost^2 ^^:

And once again I'm really impressed.

I won't be using the IP feature, neither static nor "predictable" one I fear, but still, the fact you got a feature like that is just impressive and great.
Kudos to you, you really give one the impression to care about the users' safety and such.

The announcement system sure is nice. I hope that IBs Twitter will still be regularly informing of (upcoming) updates, as that also reaches me when I'm not on my computer, but it is a very nice addition, especially when writing or uploading on the website., so, thanks very much for this addition.^^

Yeah, so, even with just these two features it would be a great update, looking forward to mentioned "full details", but it's already great as it is.

Thanks for all the work, looking forward to the future.
Now we need to get more users. *goes off to kidnap people^^*

Greetings,

I'm curious, what if your IP changes unexpectedly? How would you gain access to your account after that? =O

Damn, that's indeed a quite good question.
Use jDownloader's auto-reconnect to get a new one every five seconds until it works again?^^

Also, what if your travelling and want to check in from a hotel, or a WiFi hotspot. Could make things a bit funky. I love the idea its there tho, so if your concerned about your account then its good to have for sure. For me, its more security than I need since theres nothing of value, but its nice to have that option.

Yes if you plan to travel and still access your account then you could temporarily blank out the IP range entry or add *.*.*.* (allow all) so you can keep your old entries intact.

Of course you are more likely to run into a cookie theft or SSL attack while using untrusted networks while travelling so extra caution should be used (log out of all sessions the moment you finish, clear all cookies and details when you leave the public computer, etc).

I also responded to Shokuji here https://inkbunny.net/journalview.php?id=11996#commentid...

That's exactly what should happen if the IP changes suddenly. You get locked out. You email us at admin@inkbunny.net and say HEEEELP to get the new Ip added if that happens. That shouldn't happen unless you made a mistake with the IP ranges. If you set it up right you should put in the IP range that your ISP provides you with.

heyy nice new updates...even though i would like the announcements a bit more transparent :D (look at the banner on the screenshot^^)

lately my all my pages that contain more stuff (like the new submissions page) seem to have problems with widescreen resolutions....i don't know if it's really a bug....and it's a minor problem....but somehow it looks a bit odd....

Oh yes, that's because the image for the rounded corners is a limited length! I've been meaning to make it longer. Will try to do that for the next update!

well, as i said it's just a minor "problem" :)

[edit] but the announcement should be a bit transparent...look at the bunny on that screenshot...it's anonymous now xD

Censored bunny! :D Yeah I could make it a bit transparent. I tried that originally but making just the bg transparent and cross-browser compaitble is a bit fiddly.

Hm... The Announcement just went away on it's own as I was reading this thread. I don't really like that because someone could open up a tab with IB and miss it because disappeared before they got to the tab.

It only goes away if you clicked "Hide this message" in at least one tab. It'll hide it in all tabs then (takes about a minute for the other tabs to notice you told it to go away). :P

It also goes away if I dismiss it site-wide but I haven't done that yet. Maybe a bug? Hmm.

Oh hey, it works even better than I expected.

I had opened the journal in a new tab, then dismissed it. So it actually checks to make sure you still need to see it.

i like how even DA now doesn't have some features you've developed.
now... just needs a forum or something in the style.

well maybe. anyways of the plethora of imageboards and forums, irc chatrooms around it's not really necessary to host one on ib, certainly. but i think the community here isn't bad at all.
well, that's just a random idea... if you believe or be confident that it's gonna be a trollfest or a keyboard to punching ball converter, maybe it's better like this.

Lots of people have been asking for one so it could happen one day! :3

Wow, so cool! Cant wait to try out your new security feature. :) Will there be an IB wiki article on how to set it up if I cant do it on my own? I might be able to but I'm not a complete genius when it comes to many computer related issues. Thanks in advance!

It probably doesn't need a Wiki. Just mouse-over "Account" and click on "Settings" and it's the second item on the left called "Access by IP Range" click that, but as mentioned it is an advanced feature and probably only useful for those with permanent IP addys.

ah, once again an update and the one feature i've been hoping for is still missing. a download all button for series of pics and stories. i like the site wide banner it's a great idea.

I may not be super tech savvy but I can understand when someone with greater technical knowledge answers in their own way any tech question I may have so I wanted to ask about the IP address security feature:

Is it possible for someone to hack the system in a way that they can actually block, If I'm the target, my own IP address to prevent me from ever getting into my account? Just concerned about how something like that would go down if at all possible. :/
starling
7 years, 5 months ago
Yes, if someone got control of your account they could block your IP. But even before that feature existed they could also change your password and account email address which would have exactly the same effect. If that ever happens of course users should contact us asap.

IP address restricting sounds cool! Unfortunately my IP changes so often that I have to re-whitelist my IP pretty often on my own website any time I edit the template(Wordpress Firewall is a great plugin, but is always suspicious of template edits). I guess it's a result of rebooting. Still, it's good to know that feature is there for those that can use it. I hadn't heard of any other sites doing that.
