It's a toughie when it comes to structual stuff; usually there's statics, strength of materials, one for foundation and soil sciences, and then your choice in either steel structural properties or concrete structural properties; at least for a civil engineer.
I hate that "function as form" mentality; cause most of the time the function gives way to the form, despite that sickening mantra... arg. The result is ugly buildings that don't really function all that well, and often have other issues. Things have improved greatly since the modernist and post modernist movements; but still tons of buildings go up that are both ugly and not too functional.
