Well it's eather draw distince or low ram.

If you do a preview render does it show everything (just ruling out actuial programing glitch)

defaults in the view port are generally set low at first to improve frame rate.

it's mainly about memory.  the more on your screen in a raw format like that the more active ram being used sometimes twice.
once in editing memory and once in viewport controle ram (and then gpu and system)

most of the time when your pulling back that far youve got some kind of city or high polycount sceen setup.

it's allso why most 3d programs let you "hide" objects in the viewport while editing Frees up active ram and the viewport.
