I'm kinda underwhelmed by the companions in 4 so far. Of the ones I've met, Preston's alright but kinda boring, Strong just makes me want Fawkes back, Piper is really kind-of a horrible person so I'm not really even pursuing her. I might hire MacReady, mostly out of FO3 nostaliga. I have no interest in wandering the wasteland with a doddering old busted-up Mr Handy so I forget Codsworth is even an option a lot.
Dogmeat and Nick Valentine are the only companions I actively want to continue adventuring with. They're pretty awesome.

Can't being myself to abandon Dogmeat. I've just gotten all the companions, then sent them to Sanctuary and gotten Dogmeat back. Give him a teddy bear every so often just for the feels.

Nick is probably my 2nd favorite for 3 reasons (or 2)
1 and 2 being the expert level hacking and lockpicking 3 being how he reacts the mysterious stranger
Although that said my favorite companion is probably Hancock His companion perk isnt that great but I have never done anything he didnt like and I played it how I felt first time through
