Attila the Hun, emperor of all of Europe not part of the Roman Empire, started the refugee migration that caused Venice to be built. Its first non-Byzantine ruler* was in the latter 7th century. It's last ruler was about 1800,(a brief revival after Napoleon's day did not catch on).
Shame if the city will be destroyed after all this time by a rising sea level.
* By the latter 7th century, rival native doges appeared who did not owe fealty to the Byzantine empery. Eventually they effected autonomy and independence from the Empire of the East (corrupted by now).
