About
In this Raki News "Advertisement", the infamous Nutty Burt has yet again changed his business model. Instead of trying to sell leaky ships that were once soul-bound, he's now trying to flog a wide assortment of useless knives and swords.
The ad is called "Bohemian Cutlery", a parody of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", with brutal depictions of how great it can be to own blades purchased from Nutty Burt. Other references, such as a famous scene from "Crocodile Dundee" are also in the ad.
Technical
Taking on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and making a parody of it is probably the most ambitious parody work I've done yet. A lot of people love the original song, and it wouldn't do to make a poor imitation of it. It was important that the sound was as close to the original as I could get it, while still retaining enough originality to avoid accusations of plagiarism. Right from the start, I skipped the idea of using midi for anything but the drums. Live instruments and natural voices was the key.
I knew from the start that I could never reproduce Brian May's great guitars, me being only a beginner at the guitar, and there are limits to how much you can cheat with a home studio. Back then I didn't have access to anyone who could play the guitar well enough to do this either. Luckily, it turned out not to be necessary, as the guitars don't come in until way after two minutes into the song. I decided to go for the first parts for the commercial, since not many commercials would stretch longer than that anyway.
The bass was relatively easy to learn, and with a bit of practice, I could do a passable version of the bass line. Piano is my main instrument, so there weren't any problems with that that a little practice couldn't solve.
For a while, I was toying with the idea of using pitching software for the vocals to make the recording more comfortable and to fix any misses, but in the end I decided against it. All the vocals were recorded as-is, and with a dry sound, only employing compression and a bit of equalization on the lead vocals to get my voice to sound a little bit closer to that 70's "radio" sound.
In the end, I hope that I did Queen some justice with this parody. If not... at least I tried my best.

Lyrics
Is this a real knife?
Is this just cutlery?
Caught in a blood-slide
No escape from brutality
Try out our knives
Just give a slice
And see
Burt! Be careful! That's a competitor and he's
got a knife!
Hehe! That's not a knife!
*Sound of ridiculously long knife being drawn*
That's a knife!
That's right! At Nutty Burt's Bohemian Cutlery
You can find swords and knives of all sorts and
sizes, ready for your everyday maiming needs
We give you the same great quality as
Nutty Burt's Previously Souldbound Vessels
(Though for legal reasons we can't sell boats
anymore)
But just listen to this testimony
From a satisfied customer
Mama, just hurt a man
Used a knife from Nutty Burt
Then I stabbed him, now he's hurt
Mama, that was really fun
With quality to cause that extra pain
Mama, ooooh
Gonna buy some knives for you
So you can slice the neighbors by tomorrow
Carry on, take 'em out
Cause these knives really matter!
