Yes, Steve Gerber had a wry cast on Howard. Howard was meant to be a one-shot, he fell off the path while accompanying a sorcerer, his disciple,and Man-Thing to some mission involving the Cosmic Axis, and was supposedly lost forever in infinity. Gerber didn't intend to write any more of the character, but fan demand had him brought back.

Yeah, and that was the work of Dr.Bong (I'm going by memory, since most of my Howard issues seem to have been stolen). I haven't done a thorough sorting of what I have on my shelves. And, yes, he wasn't much to look at (mission accomplished!). And it wasn't Beverly's carnal prowess that undid the malice of Dr. Bong's evolvo-chamber, but a hook-up Howard enjoyed in G. In the very first issue of Cerebus the Aardvark (which I have a reprint of, in book collection form), he came into a bar and the innkeeper said "Hey, you're a ...". That's as far as he got, as Cerebus dragged him over the bar and almost onto his sword ! The innkeeper saved his neck by amending his crack to "You're a guest !". Nobody fooled around with Cerebus ! Not if they hadn't kept up their life insurance payments !
