Well, they´re made for digging through rocks.
Usually he keeps them dull so he won´t hurt anyone by accident, but they´re still pointy. xD

He'd need gloves that are sturdy around the claws so they can't be bended broken, with openable tips.

Breaking isn't the main problem, safety is. Specifically designed gloves would fix both until the claws are needed.
