From what i have ben learning via videos on youtube... you are a soul piloting the fallen kids body... that toriel put in the flower patch similar to the spreading ashes on the flowers... the proper buryal. in the genocide runs.. you go more with the original idenitiy.. and genocide run 2.. the body begins doing thongs on its own.. the kid taking over.

When Chara died, Asriel absorbed his soul. When Asriel died, he was buried in that bed of flowers, so Chara's soul was there too.
When Frisk falls down into the bed of flowers, Chara starts trying to take him over. If you go down the genocide route, then Chara is successful and is heavily implied to actually be the player -- the developers hoped you'd put your own name, and you the player are clearly the murderous psychopath Chara is portrayed as if you get to that part of the game.
