Shadow must have thought that Sonic was dead. Can't blame him Scourge and the Iron Queen left hints that wasn't alive. Probably what they believed if he hasn't been seen in 700+ years.

Poor Sonic looks pretty scared, trying to do his best to sacrifice himself so a friend can escape is in his nature. I'm glad Shadow found him!
