In my fan-fics, a wizard needs (1) personal force - Magic derives from personal force, (2) the wand, (3) a spellbook,holding the basic spells. More can be added as expertise and skills grow, and (4) the spells. Some are too awesome for beginners to use, requiring great personal force (and a few require vast personal force, only effected by a legion of wizards, all prepared to DIE to work the spell).

Also needed is (5)a scrying ball, (6) anti-glamour eye drops to see things as they really are, (7)the broomstick, There may be other items, BUT I will not waste time looking them up.

Some spells require at least a pint of one's blood, or being nude,....
