Hey, Marcello's not a detective all the time. 90% of the time she's fussing over minute details and craving difficult puzzles like a junkie, but when she's not indulging her addiction to mystery, she's in the deep end with her light addiction.

Marcello likes lights. Her apartment is a mostly-dark place with different coloured glass sculptures lit up to bathe it in a swirling aurora, particularly her bedroom. Her esca is not actually a biological necessity, but a piercing she got because she likes having a lantern hanging off her forehead. She likes laser light shows and... well, stuff. Lights.

So naturally she loves the raves. She might have a problem.

Is the piercing subcutaneous, or is it anchored into her skull?

Well that 'anchor' is her "illicium" - also known as a "rod" - that is an actual part of her body.

The thing about the "esca" is that it's normally just a bulb at the end that collects luminescent bacteria, making it glow. Since Marcello isn't about to just gather a bunch of germs on her illicium, her esca is a solid piercing on the end of her illicium. It's attached to the end of that rod, and the rod is attached to her head. I don't think any part of it is actually, physically connected to her actual skull, however.

Ohhhhhhh, I thought both the rod and bulb was the piercing. But it's just the bulb. Makes much more sense now. Rather inspired, actually.
