Eight Star has always operated quietly in Equestria, known of by the princesses, but he has never needed to directly conflict any of them.
600 years of training within a crystal's "realm" to learn the powers he has, and here's Twilight... a "still new princess" who's had previous encounters with Eight Star, (in some of the old fanfiction,) before becoming a princess. Since her ascension, he's mostly let her be... but what has he done to bring this about? For that matter, why would she seek out a unicorn of such mystical powers? Perhaps this is her way of getting him to listen to her... conflict.
She could never get the Elements to agree on removing him. Pinkie and Fluttershy are far too friendly to him, and Rainbow Dash thinks he's fun. So pitting magic against magic... what wins? Experience, or raw energy?
