This one didn't come out as I wanted, I don't know why. Ah well... Can't win them all.
Aqualfans are an intelligent aquatic race. Their tendrils hold organs that react to different electromagnetic wavelengths, allowing them to 'see'. As they grow up, so does their number of tendrils, each new one specializing on a particular wavelength so an optimal sets is analyzed: their development depends strongly on their environment.
Their tentacles also multiply as they grow older, each one specializing in a particular task; starting with a single one, they can get to be so many that their owner can barely move. Fortunately, Aqualfans' growth is, so to say, logarithmic: once their development starts, they'll quickly sprout tendrils and tentacles, but progressively slow down.
Although in very rare cases Aqualfans can reproduce by partition, their most usual method is by spores. These, unfortunately, are known to be very nutritious, which limits their population at predators. However, they are known to be able to inoculate their spores into other beings' bodies to assure their survival.
This causes a surprising symbiosis: the forming embryos improve their host's system, giving it an above average health, strength and agility. Once they are ready, the newborns will abandon their host causing no harm - although maybe a certain discomfort.
