So much comedic hay has been made of the Sith Claymore, but I see the smaller weapon as almost a kind of light-tonfa.
A typically atmospheric and organic portrait from Our Host.

i can understand the claymore in some ways..... the horizontal beams on the hilt could be used to block attacks sliding down the blade towards the hands, or for a punching attack on top of the normal swing.

All those big and heavy European swords were designed expressly to execute such moves, and many more, sophisticated ones besides. It wasn't just the long blade, but those thick, solid (and pointy) hilts and that big medallion at the very base of the grip. Four different weapons upon one instrument, to be used a variety of ways, not just swinging it around like a giant steel baseball bat.
Classic European martial arts are so hideously unknown here in the states.

Even with such high mortality rates for these guys...i'd still join them. Even if i killed myself with these weapons, just getting to hold them.........WORTH IT!!!
