Only a few others had the strength to resist the One Ring. (1) Tom Bombadil. Hints were made of his extreme longeivity (Tom saw the first acorn, the first flower...).The Ring was unable to affect him at all. He was perhaps a Ainur gone native (like Rosgobble became ineffectual as a wizard).. The Council at Rivendell decided that he could not be trusted to guard the One Ring forever. It MUST be destroyed - forever ! (2) Sam Gardener. The Ring tempted him to turn all Mordor into a garden, but Sam shook these cobwebs from his mind ,realizing that just his own House with a white picket fence, was quite enough for him. For this, he earned his place in Valinor years later. (3) Galadriel. She resisted the Ring's temptation, saying she would diminish and go into the West. For this, the Ban was lifted from her.
