It's simple: whatever it is, you have to sleep through it. Nightmares are the embodiment of unprocessed unresolved troubles saved into memory, and not going through them prevents the brain from processing them and thus casting them away, only to re-appear until they are processed. That's, assuming they're not acquired through illegal drugs.
