Pencil and color sketch of an Arabian mare.
No that isn't blood on her shoulder. Theres actually a legend behind the marking.
Legend of the Bloody Shoulder Arabian.
It was once said that a great warrior took his prized Arabian mare into a great battle, where he was fatally wounded. His prized mare was no better off, having sustained mortal injuries to her own body. But she carried her rider home, his blood rolling off her shoulders. Once home, the warrior's family took him inside their tent while others tended to the mare, who surprisingly lived. Attempt after attempt to remove her rider's blood was met with no success. Upon having her first foal the family was shocked to see the same marking on the lil foal's own shoulders. It is said that the Great Spirit blessed the mare for her bravery and thus granted a marking to show it, in a permant form, known as the Bloody shoulder.
That is pretty much the jist of the legend. There are so many variations to it, that to find the TRUE one is next to impossible.
