On August 31st, 1957, after 200 years of British colonial rule (with an interrupted 5 year period under the Japanese), the "Jalur Gemilang", or Stripes of Glory was raised as the British Union Jack was lowered for the last time at Merdeka Stadium. Our first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, chanted, "Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!" and the Federation of Malaya was born (it would be changed to Malaysia a few years later).
Since then, Malaysia has transformed from a rural, rubber-tapping and tin-mining nation to become an economic powerhouse in Southeast Asia with an industrious, export and trade-driven economy with a thriving electronics, IT, automobile, petroleum and biotechnology industries. Kuala Lumpur has changed from a sleepy mining town to a humming, gleaming metropolis.
This is a day when Malaysians look back at how far we've come and how each year we are getting closer and closer to our goal of being a fully developed nation by 2020. The thing that symbolizes this development more than anything else is the Petronas Towers, which dominate the KL skyline and made Malaysia known around the world and the first building in 100 years to take the title of "tallest building" away from America. They have become the symbol of modern Malaysia
I had a lot of fun and a feeling of patriotism doing this piece. Johairi and Me show off our patriotism by holding up the Jalur Gemilang in front of The Petronas Towers. I got the pic off google but I still love how this piece came out.
