That is a recent development. The word gay actually means to be in a happy mood. In good spirits.

In terms of homosexuality the word gay long referred to both men and women. It still does. Its use to refer to males exclusively has been on the rise but is still not grammatically accurate.

I know it also means happy lol, but I've never heard of gay referring to a female homosexual.
