Starting School

The week before school went by smoothly. Black’s paperwork was worked out by Lucy and Chaotic. The process was surprisingly quick and easy. Ruby got in contact with the school to tell them that Zen would be starting school without delay. She also went and enrolled Black into school with Zen. More shopping was done for Black’s clothes and school supplies. This time Zen had a much easier time with being in the mall. It seemed that Black was able to keep his attention so Zen didn’t get as nervous. The last thing to do before school actually started was an entrance ceremony. This would take place on Monday and school would start on Tuesday. Since the school taught magic they needed to test each student enrolling for the first time. This test would help determine the best classes for each student. Before they left the house Chaotic described what would happen before hand to Zen and Black.

Chaotic cleared his throat before he began. Alright, for starters we will be in a room with a bunch of other students that will also be starting school for the first time. For those wishing to take part in the magic education there will be a test of your basic knowledge of magic. Black gave a sight. So we have to show what we can do. Chaotic nodded. Yes you will have to cast a spell or two. Black shook her head. I haven’t built up much strength yet. Looks like I will have to improvise in order to get into the same class as Zen. Chaotic smiled. I’m sure you will think of something. Zen tilted his head. What should I do to show what I know about magic? I can’t really use the same magic as you guys. Chaotic laughed. I’ll have to have a word with the instructor before you show your magic. Thought magic is so rare they might think someone else is casting for you. Black crossed her arms with a huff. At least you have the energy to cast decent magic. I’ll have to use some old spells in order to get into a good class with you.

Chaotic raised an eyebrow. What kind of old spells? Black looked up at him. You’ll have to wait and see. Chaotic shrugged and shook his head. Alright just don’t blow up the test hall. Black grinned. I’m not sure I will even have the energy to cast any good spells. I don’t think you will have to worry about anything. Ruby came into the dining room. Are you guys ready yet? We have to be at the school soon. Zen hopped out of his chair. I’m all set. I just hope I don’t mess up. Ruby smiled and walked over to Zen. I’m sure you will do fine. From what I’ve seen of your magic, you’ll have no problems. With that said everyone filed into the car. They now had 2 cars. Chaotic had gone out and picked a 4 door Ford Focus. This would be the family car used for most of the normal commuting. Chaotic had planned to drive the Focus to work and have Ruby use the Mustang. This would allow Chaotic to take Zen and Black to school easier. It was more of a hassle having a 2 door car trying to let kids in and out.

It took about 20 minutes to get to the school. The school itself was rather large, one of the largest in the district. It was no surprise that the hall the ceremony took place in was packed. Despite the large amount of people it seemed that it was mostly the families of the children starting school took up most of the space. Zen felt uneasy as he sat down with his new family among all the other families. Zen hardly noticed when a man began speaking in the front of the large area. This man was a rather large polar bear. He was all white save for the brown patch of short hair on his head.

Hello everyone, Thank you for coming out tonight. Some of you may know what is going to be taking place tonight. For those of you that are new to the district I’m Mr. Hanson. I will be teaching one of the kindergarten classes. My role is to educate students in both general education and magic use and control. With that said not everyone will want their children learning magic. This is why our school has two education programs. For those of you here today wishing to learn about magic, we will need you to show us what you already know. Families will be called up on stage for each demonstration. There are many levels of magic education. Your demonstration today will let us know what level to place you in. Now I’m sure you all are wondering why the principal was not here giving this speech. He was called away just before we started the ceremony. Forgive me if I’ve missed anything. Without any further delay I will start calling up families by their child’s name.

Zen’s heart was racing. He still hadn’t figured out what he was going to do for his demonstration. Black reached over and held Zen’s hand. Don’t worry we will be up there with you. There is nothing to worry about. Zen slowly nodded and gave a weak smile. It seemed that they were calling everyone up in alphabetical order by their last names. For the most part Zen hadn’t been paying attention, at least not until they reached the S’s. If there were siblings they would be called up at the same time. A pair of twin dragon girls caught Zen’s attention. Camron and Caiden Shoults were called up. The two dragons had identical markings. A blue and pink pattern marked most of their bodies. The hair on their heads was a dark purple. From where Zen was sitting he couldn’t make much out. Once on stage the par of dragonesses started casting elemental magic. Fire, ice, water, and lightning. Their magic seemed to be on a whole other level compared to the other cubs.

Once the dragon’s finished their demonstration Zen and Black were called up. Zen’s heart was racing as he walked up on stage with his family. Chaotic approached the instructor. I’ll have to explain something before Zen starts casting. He uses thought magic. So far he has not learned any word magic. Mr. Hanson’s eyes went wide. It’s been many years since we have had anyone able to use thought magic. How about Black? Chaotic shrugged. She won’t let me know what she has planned for tonight. With that said Black stepped forward. I’ll be doing an altered incantation. My strength is still recovering so I can’t cast word magic at the moment. This spell is not at full power but it will work to show what I can do at least.

With that said Black held both hands out and began chanting. The incantation took a little while to finish but the final word gave away what kind of spell it was. Inferno, with that final word a pillar of fire erupted from the test dummy. There were barriers keeping the flames from touching the ceiling and audience. The pillar faded a moment after the spell was cast. The test dummy was a pile of ash. Black was now panting. Her energy was barely enough to cast the spell. Mr. Hanson wrote on his clip board as Zen stepped forward. A new dummy was placed where the burned one once stood.

Zen gave a sigh and held his hands in front of him toward the test dummy. He started with fire and added wind to the flames. This caused Mr. Hanson to gasp. Duo casting was something that took years of practice. Before he could say anything Zen switched to water and lightning, putting the fire out and shocking the test dummy. Zen looked at the instructor. Do you have something for enhancing magic testing? Mr. Hanson’s mouth hung open. Y-yes we have some more sturdy dummies that you can hit or lift. Zen nodded I’ll need one of those. Zen felt more relaxed. He had forgot all about the audience. A rather large test dummy was brought out. Zen walked up to it. His body began glowing. He gave it a quick jab and the dummy flew to the wall. Before the Mr. Hanson could say anything Zen vanished. A loud boom echoed through the area. The wall had given out when Zen punched the test dummy as it hit the wall. The dummy was in peaces on the floor and the wall had a rather large hole in it. Zen gave a sigh as his body stopped glowing. He walked back to Mr. Hanson. I have no control over my sensory magic yet. I can also do healing magic but only on my body so far.

Mr. Hanson was shocked. He had never seen such a display of raw power. Shaking his head he looked at Zen and Black. You two will be in the advanced classes. You may take your seats. As soon as they were seated Zen could feel that he was being stared at. The uneasy feeling was back now that he was not using magic. Chaotic chuckled. You may have gone a little overboard there. You could have just used elemental magic and been fine. Zen looked at Chaotic. You didn’t tell me that. I thought I had to show everything I knew so far… I guess I forgot about summoning magic. But at least we got into the same class. Black nodded in agreement. I’m sure by the middle of the school year I will have the energy to cast word magic again. If not I guess I will have to start absorbing energy.

The rest of the students were called up one by one. Zen decided to close his eyes and try to calm down. He was nervous being around so many people. Once everything was said and done everyone filed out of the large assembly hall. Chaotic led the way to a small office in the elementary wing of the school. Dr. Realm was sitting at a desk in the office. He looked up and smiled. Why hello Zen… He stopped as he saw Black walk in behind Zen. I didn’t know you had any siblings. Black smiled at the doctor. I’m Black, It’s nice to meet you. Chaotic sighed. She has a long story behind her. Dr. Realm raised an eyebrow. Oh? Does she have the same kind of past as Zen? Black shook her head. Not exactly. I was kind of a witness to what happened to Zen. None of that actually happened to me though. You could say we share a link. In a way I’ve seen through Zen’s eyes before. Dr. Realm nodded. I understand. Many siblings with a talent for magic share a bond or a link that connects them to their family.

Dr. Realm turned his attention to Zen. This is my office Zen. I will be here every day. If you need a break from your day just come here for a quiet place or for someone to talk to. My door will always be open to you. Zen smiled. Thank you, I’m not sure how things will go tomorrow. I’m nervous. Black pulled Zen close to her side. Don’t worry we’ll be together. I won’t leave you. Dr. Realm gave a chuckle. Looks like you have yourself a protective sister. I’m glad you will have someone with you that you know. It might have been hard starting school out with no one around that you knew. Chaotic nodded. I was kind of worried at first. When Black showed up things got easier though. Her ability to calm Zen down is a god sent. Black blushed. Oh come on I don’t do that much. Ruby shook her head. When Lucy first arrived you stopped Zen from hurting anyone. If you hadn’t tackled Chaotic and Lucy who knows what would have happened.

Zen looked down. I’m sorry about that. Chaotic shook his head. There’s no reason to apologize. You have a past that most people wouldn’t be able to handle. It’s amazing that you can even function normally. Dr. Realm shook his head. I was informed of the incident. To think one of the council members could have been behind something so horrible. But enough about that. We don’t want to dwell on painful topics. What class did you two get into? Both Zen and Black spoke at the same time. The advanced class. Black giggled. I still have a lot of recovering to do before I can cast magic frequently. At the moment I can’t use any of the regular word magic. To cast I have to use incantations. I guess I kind of drained my energy getting here.

About an hour of talking went by. It was supper time. The Storm family said their goodbyes to Dr. Realm and set out to get some fast food before heading home. After a quick meal of burgers and fries they went back home. Baths were taken and everyone was rather quick to fall asleep. In the morning Zen and Black woke up to the smell of bacon. They each got themselves out of bed and proceeded to get dressed. Black shared the room with Zen. There were two beds in the room but most of the time Black slept in the same bed as Zen. Once they had dressed Zen and Black went to the kitchen to see what was for breakfast. Ruby turned to see Zen and Black. She smiled. Perfect timing, we have pancakes, bacon, eggs, and hash browns. Zen nearly knocked Ruby over as he hugged her in excitement. I love pancakes. Thank you for breakfast. He ran over to the table and sat down. Black had not tried pancakes yet. She walked over and sat next to Zen.

Chaotic came to the dining area. Black chuckled seeing him in clothes that didn’t seem to fit his style. He wore a white button up shirt with gray pants. His shoes were black and shiny. Chaotic sighed. This is going to take some time to get used to. Ruby shrugged. I think you look nice. Black laughed. I like the clothes you normally wear. You look like a mage in your normal clothes. Now you look silly. Those clothes clash with your style. A uniform would fit you better I think. Chaotic shrugged. I might try a few different things. We better eat and get ready. You guys have your backpacks ready correct? Black and Zen nodded. Zen looked at Chaotic. I just hope we don’t get teased. Black laughed. If they tease you I’ll smack them. Ruby began setting plates of food in front of Zen and Black. Chaotic chuckled. Remember you two have to be able to go after you finish eating. Don’t go stuffing yourselves so full that you can’t move.

Zen nodded as he dug into his food. Black copied what Zen did to his pancakes. With the first bite her tail started wagging. This is really good. Chaotic and Ruby both sat down with their own plates of food. Not much was said as everyone ate their food. Once everyone had their fill, Chaotic led the way to the car. Zen and Black climbed into the back seat placing both their backpacks on the floor in front of them. Once everyone was buckled in they made their way to the school. Chaotic spoke as he kept his eyes on the road. Are you guys as nervous as I am? Black chuckled. I don’t know. We won’t have to be in front of everyone all day. I’m sure teaching is going to be more nerve racking that being a student. Zen gave a sigh. I’m don’t know how I feel about this. I just hope things go smoothly. Black put her hand on Zen’s shoulder. I’ll be right there with you. If anyone gives you problems let me know. I’ll kick their butts. Zen laughed. I think I could do that myself if I wanted too. I really don’t want to hurt anyone though.

Once at the school Chaotic lead Zen and Black to their classroom. There was a familiar face. Mr. Hanson was sitting at a desk in the front corner of the room. He looked up from what he was reading. Oh welcome to my class. He looked at Zen and Black. Looks like you two are the first ones here. Have a seat wherever you like. Mr. Storm correct? Chaotic nodded and extending a hand. I’m starting today as the enhancing magic instructor in the upper classes. Mr. Hanson smiled and shook Chaotic’s hand. It’s good to have you on board. I’ve read stories about your deeds during the war. A master of your caliber is a welcome addition to our staff. Chaotic looked over at the clock on the wall. I’d better get to my own class. I’m sure students will be waiting for me to open the door.

After Chaotic left Mr. Hanson turned his attention to Zen and Black. Zen was looking around the room with a somewhat puzzled look. Zen looked at Mr. Hanson. Um why are there so few desks? I thought there would be a lot more people in class since this is a big school. Mr. Hanson smiled. This is the advanced class. Only a hand full are chosen to be in this class. Introductions will be made once everyone is here.

It took about 15 minutes for everyone to arrive. Zen noticed that the twin dragons from yesterday were also in the advanced class. Shortly after everyone was seated a bell rang signifying that it was time to get to class. 5 minutes later another bell rang signaling the start of class. Mr. Hanson stood and walked to the white board and wrote his name on it. He then turned to face everyone. Hello I’m Mr. Hanson, I’ll be your homeroom teacher for your first year. To start things off why don’t we have everyone introduce themselves? Let’s start with… this side of the room from right to left. He had pointed at Zen. Zen slowly stood.

H-hello my name is Zen. N-nice to meet everyone. Mr. Hanson smiled softly. Please use your full name. Zen nodded. I’m Zen Soul Storm. Once Zen sat down Black stood. She was much more chipper with her introduction. Hi everybody, I’m Black Soul Storm. It’s a pleasure to meet everyone.

Next to Black sat a cat. She stood and looked around the room. Her fur was jet black with thin white stripes up her arms and legs. Her left hand was covered in white fur looking like she was wearing one glove. Her eyes were yellow. Hello everyone, I’m Faith Neal. Nice to meet you all. Next to Faith was a griffin. His fur was brown all over his body and wings. His head was topped with white hair. Most of his head had fine white fur. The white went down his front. As he stood he looked over at Zen then back to the front of the room. I’m Charles Quells. He put his hands on his head and smiled. Let’s have some fun. Last in the front row was a lion. Her fur was a golden brown. Her hair was blond. Her eyes were a mix of yellow and green, yellow in the middle and green on the outer edge of her eyes. She stood and fidgeted a little. Hello I’m Sammy Porter. Nice to meet everyone. Zen could sense something familiar about this girl but he couldn’t put his finger on what it was.

Next was the back row, starting with a mouse that sat behind Zen. This mouse was white with large gray spots coving his body. His hair was a dark gray. His eyes were a bright red. He stood with a soft smile. I’m Chaise Williams. I’m happy to be here. Next to Chaise was another mouse. This mouse had a similar fur pattern. His fur was gray with brown spots. His hair was dark brown. His eyes were a soft green. Hello I’m Alex Williams. I’m Chaise’s cousin. It’s nice to meet you all. Next to Alex was the dragon twins. They both stood at the same time. Their scales were a blue color for the most part. There were pink patterns that were on their arms legs and neck. It appeared that the pink may even be on their bellies. They both had dark purple hair. Their eyes were a mix of 3 colors blue, orange and red. It was hard to tell the two apart. Zen could see differences in their aura. If you couldn’t see that though it would be nearly impossible to tell the two apart. Going from right to left Camron spoke first. I’m Camron Shoults, and I’m Caiden Shoults. They both spoke at the same time. It’s nice to meet you all. The last to stand was a black bear. His fur was all black. The hair on his head was slightly lighter almost a brown color. His eyes were hazel. He crossed his arms and sighed. I’m Kain Roberts. This is going to be a drag isn’t it.

Mr. Hanson shook his head. That’s not a good way to look at things. Kain just shrugged and sat down. Mr. Hanson clapped his hands together once and smiled. Alright with introductions out of the way, let’s go over what you can expect the day to day work we will be dong. We have general classes in the morning. Since I don’t know any of your experience I’ll be working with each of you one on one thought the year. In the afternoon you will all have physical education and some magic classes. Faith raised her and. Mr. Hanson smiled. Yes Faith you have a question? Faith nodded and stood. Why do you have Physical education? I thought this was a magic school. Mr. Hanson nodded. You’re right this is a school for magic. In order to prepare your bodies for the strain of casting magic we first have to get you all stronger. Your bodies are the source of your power after all. If your body is weak you will not be able to cast any magic. Are there any other questions?

No one raised their hand. Mr. Hanson then started his lessons. May of the cubs were struggling with some of the things covered in class. Zen had already been taught how to read and write so much of the general education was more of a refresher for him. Black just seemed board. She definitely didn’t need these kinds of classes. After some time in class the cubs were given a break. They were allowed to either quietly sit in their chairs or lie down on some mats in the back of the room for a short nap. Zen chose to put his head down at his desk. Black turned to him. Are you doing alright Zen? Zen turned his head but kept it on his arms as he sat at his desk. Yeah I’m doing fine. I just felt like closing my eyes for a minute. Black smiled. Alright, if you start to feel overwhelmed we should get you to Dr. Realm’s office. Don’t want an incident on our first day do we? Zen nodded and covered his eyes. Yeah we don’t want that.

After the break Mr. Hanson approached Zen and Black. You two seem to be having no problems at all with the lessons. In fact I think you already have the basics covered. Zen slowly nodded. I was taught how to read and write when I was taught the first magic I learned. Mr. Hanson tilted his head. What magic was that? Zen sighed. I was forced to learn summoning. I don’t really want to talk about that though. Mr. Hanson smiled and knelt down. That’s okay Zen. I won’t ask anything. If you ever feel like sharing your past though I’m all ears. He then turned to Black. What about you? Black scratched her chin. I’d have to say my situation is extremely complicated. You could say I have the memories of my past lives. It’s more like glimpses of my past but it’s enough. I remember how to read and write. I also remember most of the magic I had learned. Mr. Hanson raised an eyebrow. That’s a little hard to believe young lady.

Black grinned mischievously. She then spoke in a strange language. This caught everyone off guard. Zen looked at Black. What was that? Black laughed. That was magic speech. The words can be strung together to create a spell. I used this language to cast the “Inferno” spell last night. Changing the words in the spell can change the strength and the makeup of the outcome. I currently cannot quick cast word magic. That method of casting uses twice as much magical energy than a full incantation. I’ll have to strengthen my body if I’m going to be able to cast quick magic again.

Mr. Hanson nodded. That is a good example of the differences in magic types. We will be having magic classes after lunch. For now let’s get back to our writing. Practice writing each letter… the day sped right along. Soon the bell rang for lunch. The class was lead to the lunch room. There were lines of students waiting for their food. Zen could see that there were 4 different lines for food. Each line had a different kind of food. Mr. Hanson turned to his students. Alright we have 4 choices. Lasagna, spaghetti, pizza, and mashed potatoes and meat loaf. Zen turned to Black. I only know what one of those things were. Black shrugged. Don’t ask me. I’m just as in the dark as you to the names of food. Mr. Hanson then asked for a show of hands for each choice of food. Zen and Black didn’t raise their hands for any of the food. The choice was a landslide for lasagna. Mr. Hanson looked down at Zen and Black. Don’t you like the food choices? Zen shook his head. I just don’t know what they are other than pizza. I’ll learn them eventually. From somewhere in line one of the other cubs laughed. How do you no know what lasagna is? Zen looked down. I never got to try good food up until a month ago. I’m still learning what the names of foods are. Another cub laughed. I bet your parents were just too lazy to teach you the names. Zen’s stomach knotted up. Anger was welling up inside him. He was trying to keep himself calm but his hands balled up into fists.

Just as the line was about to start moving Faith gasped. Zen you’re bleeding. Mr. Hanson turned quick and kneeled down next to Zen. Zen’s hands were dripping blood. Mr. Hanson quickly called for some paper towels. We have to get you to the nurse’s office. Zen looked down at his hands. Its fine the bleeding stopped. My claws were keeping the blood flowing. Now that I have my hands open they healed nearly instantly. One of the kitchen staff came up with a roll of paper towels and some cleaning supplies. Mr. Hanson took some of the paper towels and wrapped Zen’s hands in them. Zen looked up at the big bear. My hands are fine. I just need to wash the blood off.  I told you before I can use healing magic on myself. I really don’t have any control over the healing. My body does it automatically. Mr. Hanson gave a sigh. Alright then let’s get your hands washed. Everyone go use the bathroom if you need too. If you don’t need to use the bathroom wait here. With that said Mr. Hanson lead Zen to the bathroom a short distance from where they were standing. He had opened the doors for Zen so he didn’t get blood everywhere. Once in the bathroom Mr. Hanson turned the water on for Zen. Zen tossed the paper towels in the garbage and stuck his hands in the water.

Now that Mr. Hanson was alone with Zen he began to ask questions. What was this all about? Why did you hurt yourself just now? Zen looked back at the bear as he scrubbed soap in his hands. They talked about my parents. I got mad. My parents died when I was one. I remember the day well. For someone to say they were lazy makes my blood boil. From what I can remember of my parents, they were the kindest people you would ever meet. Zen rinsed the soap out of his fur and went to dry his hands. He looked at Mr. Hanson again. I have a lot of things from my past that I’m not ready to talk about. If you have questions you should talk to Dr. Realm or my dad. Black might be able to help too. For now can we just go eat? Mr. Hanson nodded. Yeah let’s get some food in your belly so we can go outside for recess. Zen tilted his head. What’s recess? I’ve never heard that word before. Mr. Hanson chuckled. We will be playing outside. Zen nodded. Oh okay, sounds fun.

With the blood cleaned off Zen was lead back to the other cubs. They were amazed to see that Zen was no longer bleeding and had no bandages on. Faith walked over to Zen and grabbed his hands. She looked them over carefully. How did you do that? Zen shrugged. I’ve always been able to heal fast. Black walked over to Faith and put a hand on her shoulder and whispered in her ear. It’s a long and dark story that no one here needs to hear. Faith looked at Black and then at Zen. Oh… okay. Mr. Hanson got his students back in line and proceeded to lead the way to the lasagna line.

Once the food was received everyone went to sit at one of the tables in the lunch room. Each class sat at tables assigned to their class. Zen was a little disappointed with the amount of food he was given. One slice of lasagna and some garlic bread with a side of green beans and a box of mink. Black looked at Mr. Hanson. Is there any way to get more than this? Mr. Hanson shook his head. Everyone gets the same amount of food. If you need more you may want to ask your parents to give you a packed lunch. Zen looked at Black. We’ll have to as Ruby. For today we will just have to deal with it. Black nodded and began eating her food. Zen followed her example and quietly ate his food.

After everyone finished eating Zen noticed that many of the cubs didn’t finish all of their food. This struck a nerve with Zen. His view was that if you took the food you should eat all of it. No food should go to waste. Black put her hand on Zen’s shoulder. She could feel his tension. She shook her head as if to say “let it go”. Zen nodded. He stood carrying his tray a drop of area. From there the trays would be taken and washed. After dropping his tray off Zen and the other cubs were lead to the playground.

Cubs from other classes were running around playing various games. Zen looked over to see the dragon twins stretching out their wings. They both turned and smiled before they flapped their wings and began hovering. With a giggle they both took off flying around the area with great speed. Zen smiled and turned to Black. That’s awesome I wish I could fly. Black giggled and shook her head. When you are able to control your magic you will be able to fly with ease. If I had enough energy I could show you how to fly. For now let’s go have some fun.

As Zen and Black went running around the playground chasing each other and laughing they were being watched. Kain was glaring at the two wolves as they played. He sat under a tree watching the other cubs. The griffin boy Charles walked up to Kain. That’s a sour look. Who rubbed you the wrong way? Kain glared up at Charles. Those two don’t belong here. There a couple of freaks. Charles laughed looking back at all the other cubs. Who are you talking about? None of us are normal. We all can already use magic. Kain shook his head. Those wolf twins are not right. The amount of energy I feel coming off the white one… he shouldn’t be here. And then there’s the black one. She knows more about magic than she should. None of this feels right. Charles shrugged. Well they passed all the tests we did. Their dad is one of the most powerful enhancing magic masters. It’s no wonder those two know magic. Kain shook his head. They aren’t his kids. I hear they were adopted. Since they moved to town there was a strange earthquake in the neighborhood. I live near them so my house shook pretty hard. Not only that but, the next day their house looked like a big battle took place there. Kain shook his head. Maybe I’m just reading too much into it. I still get uneasy being around them. Charles sighed and crossed his arms. Why don’t you just go ask them what happened? Kain nodded. Maybe I will. I should try and talk to them for a while before I go asking stuff like that though.

With that said Kain stood and began approaching Zen and Black. When he was close enough he called out to them. Hey… um Zen right? Zen stopped and looked at the black bear talking to him. He nodded with a smile. Yep and your Kain right? Kain slowly nodded. Yeah I’m not really good at this kind of thing. Black giggled walking over to the bear. That’s fine at least you’re trying. Come on let’s sit down. We need a break from running around anyway. Charles walk up a short time after Kain approached. He smiled. Hey guys mind if I join you. Zen started feeling shy with Kain now with another person he felt even more uneasy. Um yeah if you want to… Black giggled come on Zen don’t be so shy. Zen looked down and shrugged. I can’t help it. I feel weird around people I don’t know. Kain nodded. Me too. I have a hard time meeting new people. Charles laughed as he sat down with the growing group. I find it easiest to just go up and start talking. If they don’t like me then I will know right away. If I make a new friend then that’s great. Black nodded. I like that, it sounds like what I would do. Zen stayed quiet for most of the conversation. By the time he started feeling like talking a little a whistle was blow. All the cubs went running to the doors. Zen, Black, Kain, And Charles were the last to reach the door to go inside.

Once everyone was back in the classroom Mr. Hanson started his next lesson. This would go over the many different magic types. Zen got really interesting in this part of the school day. He wanted to learn everything he could about magic. The lessons covered the basic descriptions of each magic type and what could be done with them. It wasn’t long before everyone in the room started looking sleepy. Mr. Hanson looked over at the clock and clapped his hands once drawing everyone’s attention. Alright we should probably start your physical training now. We will be heading to the gym.

The cubs were lead to the gym. There was exercise equipment along one of the walls and a big open area with a track around it in the middle. Mr. Hanson looked at the cubs with a smile. To start off we will be running a few laps. I want you all to run till you start feeling tired. When you do stop and come back here. Zen raised his hand. Um this could take a while. Mr. Hanson laughed. I’m sure we will have enough time. Zen shrugged. I’m not so sure. Black giggled let’s just show him what you can do. I’ll try and keep up. Everyone lined up and started running around the track. Many of them stopped after just one lap. They were panting hard. Zen and Black kept a much faster pace than the rest of the cubs. After about 10 laps Black came to a stop breathing hard. The others had at most done 6 laps. Zen kept running without even breathing hard.

Mr. Hanson looked at Black a little confused. How long do you think he will be able to run? Black scratched her chin. Well at this speed I’d say… about 4 or 5 days. Mr. Hanson’s mouth fell open. You’re joking right? Black shook her head. When he was finally free I think he ran for 4 days straight. And that was without food… so yeah his stamina is off the charts. Mr. Hanson called Zen over. When Zen was standing next to the bear Mr. Hanson spoke. It looks like you have more stamina than anyone I’ve ever seen at your age. Zen looked down. Sorry it will take a lot to tire me out. Magic is the only thing that will get me tired. Mr. Hanson laughed. There’s no need for apologies. We know now that you don’t need as much physical training. Now let’s go over to the weights. Mr. Hanson put a small amount of weight on one of the bars. I’d like for each of you to try and lift this. Zen walked over to another weight bench. He started adding weight. Zen proceeded to lay down after putting the weight on the bar. Mr. Hanson looked over just in time to see Zen lift the bar with a large amount of weight on it. He gasped and ran over to Zen. You’re going to hurt yourself lifting that much. Zen didn’t even grunt. He lifted the weight brought it down to his chest and then put it back up on the rack.

Mr. Hanson was in shock. He looked the bar over. There as about 200 pounds on the bar. He looked at Zen with wide eyes. This shouldn’t be possible. You just lifted 3 or 4 times your weight. Zen shrugged. I think I always have enhancing magic flowing through me. I can’t control it. You saw what happened when I punched that stone statue last night. I have more power than I can control. Black giggled. Zen is amazing in many ways. I’m sure you will find out soon enough what he can do.

It wasn’t long before everyone had finished lifting and all their scores were wrote down. Black wasn’t nearly as strong as Zen, but she knew that would be the case. After all she was essentially a new born. Her strength needed time to develop. This was also true for her magical energy. These tests and strength training were exactly what she needed. Given time she would regain her former strength and may even become as strong as Zen.

After all the strength training was done the cubs were lead to a room where they could use their magic. Since using magic was the so tiring it was saved for the end of the day. Mr. Hanson turned to the cubs as he began explaining what they would be doing. We will be starting with elemental magic practice. I want each of you to light one of those statues on fire and see how long you can keep it burning. All the cubs lined up except for Black. She walked over to Mr. Hanson. I don’t have the energy to cast spells right now. Mr. Hanson nodded. That’s okay. I’m sure you will get your strength built up in a month or 2. Black nodded and sat down.

All the others cast their fire magic at the same time. Zen’s magic was on a far larger scale than the others. He was trying to make the flames smaller but the size never changed. Once again he was the last one standing. His fire was still burning strong after the last of the others couldn’t keep their fires going. Caiden sat down panting. How does he have so much power? Zen shrugged. This type of fire doesn’t drain as much power as some of the other spells I’ve used. If I wanted to burn up my energy quick I would have to try and keep all 10 statues on fire. Mr. Hanson chuckled. I doubt you could do that for very long. Give it a shot if you can. Zen nodded and began focusing. His fur began glowing and the symbol on his belly for his seal began showing through his clothes. One by one the other statues started on fire. As soon as they were all lit Zen could feel the strain. After about 10 seconds he stopped the spell.

Mr. Hanson yet again had his eyes wide. He hesitated as he spoke. Zen… do you have a seal on your belly? Zen looked down and his belly was glowing still. He lifted his shirt. Seeing the seal Mr. Hanson nearly fell over. That can’t be possible. You have an arch mage seal. You shouldn’t be able to cast any magic. Black laughed. That seal is a modified version of the arch mage seal. Zen looked at Black. Should I explain what it does or just show it? Black grinned. Just open one. All 5 would be too much. Zen nodded. First gate open. His body glowed brighter than when he was casting. He held one hand out to the statues. The middle statue erupted in flames that were big enough to take out half the other statues. The fire quickly went out. There was nothing left of the statues that were hit by the fire. Zen turned to Mr. Hanson. All gates close. Zen’s body stopped glowing and the seal faded. I have more power in my body than I can control. This seal is the only thing that can contain my power.

Kain looked at Zen with wide eyes. Was it you that caused that earthquake a week ago? Zen looked at Kain then at the floor. Yeah I used a spell that day with all 5 gates open. Black put her hand on Zen’s shoulder. You could say that if Zen hadn’t cast that spell I wouldn’t be alive today. That is all we will say about it. Kain nodded. That’s good enough for me. If it was to save your sister I can understand. Zen nodded. I couldn’t lose her. Mr. Hanson cleared his throat. We are getting off topic. Let’s get back to our lessons.

The rest of class was mostly demonstrations and explanation. After some time the final bell of the day rang. The cubs were brought back to home room to gather up their things. After they had their belongings they were brought out to the school busses. Zen and Black went to Dr. Realm’s office. Zen needed to tell Dr. Realm how his day went. Black waited in the hall as Zen talked to Dr. Realm.

Zen smiled as he began explaining his day. Today went better than I thought. I was worried that I wouldn’t fit in. I still kind of feel that way. I don’t know if I will be accepted with the amount of power I have. The lunches here are good… but I need more than what they give to fill me up. Recess was a little strange. I might be making new friends. I guess I will have to wait and see. I liked the gym class… but none of the others could keep up with me. Same thing happened with the magic class. Dr. Realm nodded. Your power is a lot for anyone to take in. I’m sure in time they will grow to accept you. Zen looked down for a moment. They may accept my power, but I’m not so sure about my body. Having both genders isn’t exactly normal. Dr. Realm shook his head. You shouldn’t have anything to worry about. If anyone gives your problems about your gender tell me or a teacher. That kind of behavior is not accepted in this school. Zen nodded as he excused himself.

Out in the hall Chaotic was standing next to Black with a smile. Did you have a good day? Zen smiled and nodded. His stomach growled loudly. Chaotic laughed. Let’s get you home and fed. With that said Chaotic led the way to the car. When they reached the house Ruby had food waiting for them. Her classes were only from 8 AM to noon. The rest of her day was doing things around the house. After washing up everyone sat down at the table to eat. As they ate Chaotic asked Ruby how her day went. She swallowed a big bite of food before she spoke. I’m sore all over. I didn’t expect them to put me through a damn endurance test. I don’t know what I would do if the classes were all day. Chaotic chuckled. The endurance tests will also help make your body stronger. That will help you with your magic. Ruby shrugged. It’s still a pain in the ass. Black giggled we had the same things at the end of the day. I was able to do 10 laps. I’ve got a long way to go. Ruby’s mouth dropped open. I couldn’t even do 4 laps. Zen shrugged. I did 25 laps before they stopped me. Chaotic now had his mouth wide open. They stopped you? Black giggled. When we were trying to find a place to settle down Zen ran for 4 days without stopping. His power keeps him going. Zen looked at Chaotic. How did your day go?

Chaotic sighed. Well I have a bunch of spoiled rich kids in class. They think they don’t have to listen to anything. I think one of them nearly peed themselves when I raised my voice a little. It’s safe to say I’ve got my work cut out for me. Ruby chuckled. If you need any help, I’ve still got my uniform. We could really scare the crap out of the little hellions. Chaotic shook his head with a grin. As tempting as that sounds I don’t think it would go over too well with the school board.

After they ate, Zen and Black took quick showers and went right to bed. They both felt drained after their first day of school. They could only hope the days would always go this smoothly.

Ch. 16 Friends in High Places
Ch 18 A Festive Tournament
This chapter introduces Zen's class and teacher for his first year at the school. This is by far my longest chapter. Hopefully everything makes sense.

The hardest thing I've ran into is naming the characters. Well that and coming up with their descriptions. I don't know maybe I'm putting too much thought into it.
