ART BY [iconname]vilani[/iconname]

I've had in my mind for a while now that Lance and Celia are martial arts students.  But it wasn't until recently that I wanted to have them drawn like this.  I saw Vilani was open for commissions, and I've wanted to get something from her for a long time now, so I figured I'd take the idea to her.  I think she did a fantastic job.  And I really appreciate her patience in dealing with me.

See, the sketch on the second page was the first thing she sketched out.  It's quite cute and all, but it isn't what I had in mind.  I didn't give all the pose, position, and angle details in the first description, so she had to redraw the scene.  The finished drawing is pretty much exactly what I wanted, so in the end it worked out.  I just feel bad for having her redraw the sketch.

Anyway, Lance and Celia are ten years old as shown here.  They started Karate class when they were five or six.  I picked the orange belt because I didn't want to make them at such high of a rank that it was implausible, but now that I think about it, it may be a little too low for a four or five year student.  Then again, I don't know how quickly young children grasp karate.

I know nothing about Karate or any martial art.  I used Wikipedia for info on the belt ranks and these stances.  Lance's stance is Kōkutsu-dachi, and is what I had in mind from the start.  It's mostly inspired by Akuma from the Street Fighter series of games, only Akuma's stance is a bit lower.  Celia's stance is Nekoashi-dachi, or Cat Paw Stance.  It seemed like a cute pun, but I also like how the stance looks.

The twins aren't sparring or anything.  They're about to slowly go through various moves, blocks, and counters as instructed by their sensei.  Thus the lack of pads.  Also, they take the class quite seriously.

As a side note, Lance grows up to be a karate instructor in the very school he attends as a kid.

I wish Karate was more effective. =x

Nice artwork though. ^_^ Wasn't this already posted with a background? =O

No...Vilani didn't draw a background, nor did I ask for one.  I know you commented on her submission, but no background on that, either.

I take it there are no problems, then?

I think Vilani did a fantastic job following the photo refs I gave.  Yay Google Images!  Though I don't think Celia's left foot is exact, but I'm not complaining.  She did a great job, and I don't need absolute perfection.

Oh, I told you in one of the PMs and I mentioned it in the description that some of the inspiration for Lance's stance comes from Akuma.  I found an animation for the taunt (I forgot it isn't his actual fighting stance), and he's raised up on the balls of his feet, so it's not exactly the same.  But I'm pretty certain I remember seeing Lance's pose elsewhere, because I remember seeing the arms and hands like they are here.

(As for the Akuma taunt, it's here: http://www.fightersgeneration.com/characters/akuma-ts-... )

I know diddly about martial arts, but I think it's nice that the way they hold the poses seem to show character in them, too.

Lance's pose seems solid, grounded, well-balanced, and hard to shift. It's a very masculine pose, but not aggressively so: more ready to handle whatever comes.

Celia seems lighter on her feet, more ready to move fluidly, with a narrower base and higher center of balance. A somewhat feminine pose.

I don't know anything about it, either.  I just picked those poses because they're what came to mind, and I liked them. ^_^;
