WHERE ARE THEY?
HOW DARE YOU DO THIS TO ME!
I've loved Super Smash Bros ever since I was 5 years old. It was the second game I ever played after Pokemon Red and I've stuck with the series to this day. It's one of the most fun multiplayer games there is, and it's th game I have the most fun playing with friends.

Or, well, it USED to be, until I played against Raven.

I hate to be a sore loser, and I probably sound like a whiney bitch right now, but I find it really hard to enjoy playing a game with someone when I always lose, and usually pretty badly at that. I don't want to win every time or even most of the time, I just want it to be at least some of the time. And before you argue that I've won against him before, let me make it perfectly clear that that ONLY happens when he goes easy on me, and even then it doesn't always happen, so in my book, that's not a real victory.

Now, I'm not throwing a temper tantrum because I want to be better at the game than him, by any means. I know full and well that will never happen. All I want is for us to be on an even playing field so I can enjoy playing one of my favorite games again with one of my best friends. But, the way it's looking, that will probably also never happen, despite my best efforts. I dunno, maybe I'll keep trying, but so far, it seems like every time I make a little bit of improvement, he makes just as much and I end up back where I started. It just has me really upset and I don't know what to do except admit defeat and stop playing.

So, yeah. Sorry for the vent art.

If you wish to become better at gaming, then you have to git gud and embrace the inner MLG pro within you! Drink the dew! Indulge in the doritos! And edge guard noobs like there's no tomorrow!

I don't even care about playing competitively, I just want to be able to play as well as this one person.

Well yeah, same rule applies :P You just have to practice. Study the game mechanics down to the pixels and know every inch of your character and what they can do.

Well yeah, no shit.

Well rudeness, If it's so obvious then what's the issue?
Violyte

Telling me I just need to practice and learn the game better after YEARS of doing exactly that isn't helpful.

The "git gud" and doritos thing was a joke - 3-

And in the end that's basically what it amounts to. Just practicing and abusing some of the game's more broken features. There's not much else one can really offer for a fighting game. it all just boils down to reflexes, exploits, and timing :/

Yes, I understand that, but that does not help me.

Welp, I couldn't lighten the mood or offer advice, guess I failed...

I don't think anyone has successfully cheered me up from a bad mood before, so don't feel too bad

Maybe try using handicaps?

That aside, what I find helped me most was playing against other people. I used to play with only 1 person as well (my bro) ever since the first game came out.
Now with the DS version I tried playing 1 on 1 over internet and I often get my butt kicked. At first I won about 1/3 of the time but even after 1 month it went to 50/50 and now slightly above.

You learn so many new moves and tricks. And even if it can be very frustrating it helps a lot.

I had this one 2 hour-session with just one guy. We played... I dunno.. 30 matches?
At first I couldn't even touch him, dealing maybe 5-10% damage with both my lives. And then I tried new things. Experimented, learned from him (or her), realized where I was predictable and which of my moves were always countered. And slowly I got better and better. And eventually I won 1 match.

I know you said you only wanna play with 1 person. But perhaps you could try playing some online matches to break things up a little. Might give you fresh ideas and allows you to leave trodden paths.

The problem with handicaps is, again, that's not a real victory.

And regardless of who I play against, I have improved. A lot. But so has Raven. So I just end up back where I started, like I said.

Well the handicaps are to balance for people with difference level in skill, but I know what you mean. I don't like to use them as well, except maybe for complete beginners.

Sadly there is not much you can do, but to keep practicing. Maybe next time you play, don't focus on you but on him. Maybe you can find patterns to exploit.
And try playing bad from time to time. I don't mean losing intentionally, but simply using tactics a less experienced player would use. I often have troubles when, after fighting with very good players, going against a very weak players because they do not react like I expect them to.

And I guess you play without items? Cause items make winning random sometimes anyway.

I feel the same way sometimes when I play Smash with friends/family. I really used to enjoy playing the game so much, but we seemed to just drift apart for quite a while. I do still love to play the game just once in a blue moon. The last time I enjoyed playing Smash was during Melee and now its 2015 and I just started to play again. So yea, that's all I wanted to say.

poor blue Yoshi, his ass looks beat down.  you gotta try inventing new combos, then again, if they do a lot of that cheap ass throwing, things aren't going to be easy.  are you just using Yoshi, or a variety of different people?
Violyte

I'm not as good with any other character as I am with Yoshi, and combos seem to be just about impossible for me to do since I can't get the hang of short hops
ruink

do you jump with the buttons, or up on the stick?
Violyte

I'm trying to get used to using the buttons. I can usually do a short hop, but trying to do the attack I want after that is hard
ruink

one of the things that's hard to do is knowing how to use the proper jump, sometimes, you have to use the buttons while the other times you have to up on the stick.  hopping combos are best done with button jumping as it makes attacks easier

just don't play with them. i had a friend who took it way too seriously and played to win instead of for fun. no items on final destination and all that bullshit. playing with him wasnt fun and him being my friend at the time didnt factor into it. i wanted to have fun and he wasnt letting me. so i just stopped playing with him and smash bros was fun again. i mean if you really care about this person and really want to play with them that badly then idk what else to tell you.

one important thing i almost forgot to mention: dont let the way someone else plays the game ruin it for you. thats just not cool.

We play the same way though.

Well first you need to really know who your playing as (his hitboxes his jump hight all that) then throw combos its all in the manipulations and reading you dont need short hops they help but thats not bread and budder for yoshi the thing is smash is hard to teach and learn because of its movement and combo system if you lose all the time then you need to refine refine refine find what suits you then do it like you would push ups down throw back air hmm maybe try down throw fair hmm nope thats how smash works.

Id say look up your mains bread and budder (basic strings) then work from there iv played smash for yeeeaarrss since melee came out was bad at it till I looked at it differntly I looked at it like a memory puzzle reflex game rather then a fighting game you need to remember strings your enemys weakness there strings there kill moves your kill moves then you need to use everything at the right timing punish everything you can and dont get punished... eh what ever im no no more help than any one else

You should probably just find more people to play with. Me, I can beat most of my friends, but there's this one friend I have who I can never beat. I still consider myself pretty good though. It's just that there are some people who are just too good. Your Raven looks like one of those people. It's not worth beating yourself up about it (or yoshi). Just except that he's better and move on. If you can even get some KOs on him you're probably already better than most people.
