Still not happy with shading, so I'm trying to practice different techniques and see what looks best.
1) Hatching
2) Solid Shading
3) Cell Shading
4) Hatching/Cell Combo
5) Hatching/Light Cell Combo
6) Light Hatching/Light Cell Combo

Also: A hottie "plague rat pride" rat punk for my husband who got the image in his head the other week and wanted to see it realized.

(I think Pac's done something similar, but she has like 3,000 characters so chances are high she's done something similar to all of my characters. I hope she doesn't mind in any case. >.> Sorry, Pac!)

I really like the way #5 looks both up close and at a bit of distance. It gives both texture and depth to the feel of the piece.
Obviously each 'style' would be more/less appropriate based per piece of art, but generally speaking I like the 'feel' of that lifework shading. You can play with contours that way, define shaded ridges and such.

I;d say 2,3, or 4, they're the darkest, and easiest to see.
