Nightmus gets pretty dejected sometimes.  Other ghosts can frighten the besqueekers out of mousies, sometimes without even trying.  But not Nightmus.  She can't seem to scare anybody.  She tries and she tries, but she can't even make an albino blanch.  Afterlife's a pain, sometimes.

Does anyone remember Casper the Friendly Ghost?  Among the ghosts he chummed around with was Nightmare the Galloping Ghost – a ghost mare, naturally.  Like Casper, she was friendly, but she had her share of unintentional (and sometimes intentional) scaring.  Frankly, I'm astonished no MLPony fan has transplanted her into FiM fan art yet. :p

In any case, this is part of a recent attempt by me to speed up and increase the amount of my drawing things.  Although I'm working on crocheting, I still need to practice and improve my picture-making skills, especially since they have a faster turn-around time than yarncrafts.

In one fan-fiic now in progress , a ghost is subjected to Nid Nannatar's meson-boson inverter -and becomes flesh & blood again ! He now returns to the earth he knew when alive ! Also his clothes, his luggage, some money... He however finds he can not really go back. His own mother doesn't believe him when he tells her the truth -and thinks he's out to rob her. The world has moved on without him....

In his mortal state, injuries hurt and heal at the normal rate, and all the other drawbacks of mortal life.

Sort of like reincarnating only without having to go through the whole getting born and growing up process again.  I guess things go better if you follow due process in the afterlife. :p

That's an interesting concept.  He would have to accept the fact that he needs to move on with his (after-after-)life, just as everyone else has.  There's also real life parallels that he could be compared to.  For example, in India, land is so desirable as a source of wealth and yet in such short supply that some families are so overly eager to inherit, they often don't even wait until someone is ill, injured, or even dead before having them declared legally dead.  The "dead" guy is left in a state of legal limbo.  He's basically unable to own anything and has no legal status, yet he can't be arrested if he protests or decides to be a nuisance because he's "dead".

In a large fan-fic I completed a year ago, Nightmare is a kelpie, a good kelpie (unlike his compeers, who are evil and man-eaters). He will not eat human flesh, and escapes a plot to trick him iinto doing so. He then warns a nearby town of the kelpie threat. He meets Casper soon after.

Believe it or not, this JIBES with Nightmare's first appearance in Harvey. In fact, I did not read his first story in Harvey until I had written the origin story (he is ashamed of his sourse, origin and essense, tho, and was long in telling Casper.)

He is, like Casper, a shape-changer, but will not assume human form.

Interesting and I see the parallels between Caspar and your Nightmare.  (Although, I'll also unnecessarily pick the nit that Nightmare is supposed to be a female, just for the record. :p )   I admit that I've never read much of Nightmare's adventures beyond one comic from the mid-80s, so I really don't know what her official back story is other than she's a ghost horse friend of Casper's who lives in the Enchanted Forest.

In my current fan-fic, my most realized image was of B.F. (I used his initials as I do not wish to give away yet, that he is NOT my character, but somebody else's) walking down a familiar street with 2 suitcases, looking at how things have changed -or stayed the same- since he had been murdered. Some people wonder if he indeed is B.F. remembering him.

The fan-fic I completed -or,burned out, making completion a task- took 17 years.

Any fiction can be like that, sometimes.  A compelling image springs to mind and you zip along trippingly, writing away like you're on fire.  Then you get past the image's place in the story, only to trip and burn out.  Annoying, isn't it? :p

No, the story goes merrily on, with B.F.'s stay at his mother's home (as a ;lodger), getting a menial job at the A & P to pay the room & Board, getting thrown out eventually, visiting his own grave in the cemetary (odd that he;s both lying in the coffin, AND standing in the flesh reading the inscriptions), running afoul of a truant officer in the park, and I have to write more.

Another plot-line is a husband & wife who earlier went through the meson-boson inverter toi become living people -to have another child ! In the afterworld, nobody reproduces, and population must increase by the continual death in the live world.Mr. & Mrs. O (again I must truncate the name) have the usual problems (plus not having a home to go back to: they died in the house fire that destroyed it. They wind up arrested being on the scene of a MURDER just after it happened.)  Fragments of developments exist.

A planned epilogue ran so afoul of Zeph(r)on-T'Sol's stories, that it had to be dropped.

I guess life is more of a hassle after one has been dead for a bit. :\  Interesting thought processes, though.

Why does Nightmus even try ? Instead of trying to scare people, she should work on helping them. Perhaps she could benefit from Nid Nannatar's machine, and return to the living . It also works in reverse....

Keep in mind Nightmus isn't part of Harvey Comic's universe but is one of the My Little Mousie lineup.  One of MLM's themes reimagines horse-themed creatures as anthropomorphic mice in a hopefully amusing way (in this case, a ghost horse becomes a ghost mousie).  Since Casper's schtick was that he accidentally frightened people while his fellow ghosts intentionally spooked them, I figured the logical (and hopefully funny) extension would be a ghost who failed to scare anyone despite her best efforts. :p  As for why a free-roaming specter like Nightmus (or Casper) would need to scare anyone in the first place, perhaps it's a survival tactic of sorts?
