My Special Surprise

“Hannah, you are so lucky,” Said a small, two-toned brown fur on the phone. “Going to a concert after it sold out weeks ago is nothing short of amazing! You make me jealous my friend! You always get the breaks. You know, in a way, I am glad that our day out together yesterday was cancelled. No, no, no, no I didn’t mean it that way. It’s just that everything that I did and everywhere I went was not of my doing! Hannah, my day began with a rather unexpected phone call. Let me tell about yesterday from the beginning, as I said, my day started with a strange phone call…”
*ring* riiiiing* *riiiiiiiiinnnnggg* the constant ringing of the phone finally broke through Lady Kix’s dreams. Blindly, she desperately fumbled for the phone in order to quiet it’s incessant ringing. “H-h-h-ello?” She said as she yawned into the receiver.
“Kix, this is Carlos, are you awake yet?” Came a voice from the other end of the line.
“No, but I will be shortly, why?”
“I was calling you to tell you that we don’t need you to come in at all today.”
“WHAT? WHY?” She nearly yelled as she sat up, all traces of sleep instantly vanishing. “You practically begged me to come in today because you were short handed, HELL you even said you were going to pay me double time for having to lose the money I paid for the concert I was going to go to tonight.”
“I know Kix, and that is why I am still going to pay you even for not coming in today. All I can say as to why you are not going to work today is that I got word from above that you are not allowed to work at all today. I’m sorry Kix, but my paws are tied on this matter. Just to let you know, I fought to make sure that you still get paid, twice what I said, it was the least that I was able to do because of this.”
“OK Carlos, I forgive you. But now that I am not going to be working, not to mention not going to the Enigma concert tonight, I have no idea what to do.”
“Don’t worry Kix, knowing you, that won’t be a problem for very long, good-bye. And I am sorry about today.”
“I know Carlos, it wasn’t your fault. Well at least I can still spend my morning and afternoon with Hannah before she goes to the concert with my tickets. See you in two days, bye”
Hanging up the phone, Kix silently cursed all that was holy for everything that happened today. Getting out of bed, she went to the bathroom and took a quick shower so that she could be ready to meet her friend at Starbucks before going to mall to window shop. ‘It’s a shame that James is on the West Coast meeting an important business client, otherwise I would spent the night with him’ She thought to herself.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the door chimes as they signaled that some one was at the door. Opening the door, she saw a small box that said “OPEN ME AND DO WHAT THE INSTRUCTIONS INSIDE SAY TO DO” Picking up the box and taking it inside, she sat the box on the counter looking at it trying to figure out who would send her something like this. Finally, she screwed up the courage and opened the box to find a small yellow scroll tied with a purple ribbon on top of a video game jewel case. Puzzled, she picked up the scroll and looked it over carefully. “Well, whoever sent me this, knows my favorite colors.” She said softly, as she slid the ribbon off the scroll, before unrolling it.
“TODAY NO LONGER BELONGS TO YOU. YOU, HOWEVER, WILL DO EVERYTHING THAT I TELL YOU TO DO, NO MATTER HOW DISTASTEFUL IT MAY SOUND.” The note said, “THE FIRST THING THAT YOU WILL DO IS CALL HANNAH AND TELL HER THAT SOMETHING HAS COME UP AND THAT YOU CAN’T KEEP YOUR DATE FOR TODAY. THEN, ONCE YOU HAVE DONE THAT, TAKE THE GAME CARTRIDGE, PUT IT IN YOUR PS3 AND PLAY THE FIRST THREE LEVELS. ONCE YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE TASK, FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS WILL APPEAR ON THE SCREEN, THEY WILL TELL YOU WHAT YOUR NEXT TASK WILL BE.”
Putting down the note and picking up the phone, Kix did what she was told to do. “Hannah! Hey, something has come up, and I won’t be able to go to the mall with you today. No I it is nothing serious. No, I am not sick. Hannah, I want to tell you why I won’t be window shopping at the mall today, but I can’t. Once I know something, I will let you know, I promise! Yes Hannah, I know that we have been friends since we were cubs, but right now, I can’t say anything. Talk to you tomorrow, BYE.”
Hanging up the phone, Kix picked up the game disc and looked it over. There was nothing special about it; it was black, with just one word on it “BREAKOUT”. Taking the disc out of its case and putting it into the game console, Kix kept trying to figure out who is making her do these weird things. Her thoughts were interrupted when the game finally booted up and began playing the welcome info. She sat and watched the game play screen for a few minutes before recognizing the game in its new format. Quickly, she picked up a controller and started playing the game, however, this version was much harder than what she was used to, and quickly lost the first few games.
Before she knew it, she was deep into the game enjoying the new effects, sounds and music and having fun. Then hours later and without warning, the game screen vanished and was replaced with a short message. “CONGRATULATIONS KIX, YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY NAVIGATED THROUGH YOUR FIRST TASK TODAY. IT SEEMS THAT YOU HAVE ENJOYED THIS GAME, SO ONCE YOU HAVE COMPLETED ALL YOUR TASKS FOR TODAY, YOU WILL BE GIVEN A CODE TO PERMANENTLY OPEN THE ENTIRE GAME FOR YOU GAMING PLEASURE. NOW, ON TO YOUR SECOND TASK. YOU ARE TO GO TO THE SOUTHSIDE MALL, ONCE THERE, YOU ARE TO GO TO THE CUSTOMER SERVICE DESK AND PICK UP A COURIER ENVELOPE, IT CONTAINS A MOVIE TICKET AND FURTHER INTRUCTIONS ON A SEALED ENVELOPE. NOW GO AND HAVE FUN.”
Getting up and turning off the game console, Kix was even more confused than ever. It was only that the Southside Mall that had the IMAX theater with the latest movies. Locking up her home, she got into her car and headed to the Mall, eager to find out what movie she was going to see. Doing what she was told to do, she got the envelope, opened it and found the ticket and sealed envelope. Looking at the ticket she was surprised that all that was on it was a barcode and nothing else except for the theater that she was supposed to go to. Going to the theater ticket window, she presented the ticket to the person behind the counter, who scanned the ticket before printing out another one and handing her the new ticket.
“Welcome Miss Kix. I want to congratulate you for being one of the lucky few furs who get to see this movie before the general public, enjoy!” Now she was completely confused and lost. No one here at the mall and mainly at the theater knew her. Something was not kosher here and she now wanted to know who was behind this, but first, she wanted to see this movie. She was surprised to see that the movie was about the universe and was not disappointed at all during the film. Once the film was finished, she started to get up and leave when the screen lit up again.
“Miss Kix, please remain seated for the following special featurette. Completely lost and confused, she sat back down as the featurette began playing, and what showed up on the screen shocked her beyond all measure! There was photographs taken of her from throughout the day and from the past two weeks as well. And if that wasn’t enough of a shock for her, what came out of the theater’s speakers, sent her over the edge.
“Kix, I know that you have forgotten what today is, but I haven’t. Today, marks one year that you and I have been together. I wanted our one-year anniversary to something special, so I had Carlos beg you to come in to work tonight, forcing you to give Hannah your Enigma tickets. Then, Carlos called telling you not to come in to work today. I spent the past few months getting the Breakout game created for you as I knew that you enjoyed playing that game when you were a cub, then I pulled some strings to get you a private viewing of this movie so that I can get this little featurette shown just for you. Now, if you would be so kind, please open the envelope that was with the ticket. Your final set of instructions are in it.
With trembling paws, Kix opened the envelope, and pulled out a folded piece of paper. She unfolded the first piece and read what was written on it. “Kix, tonight, you are going to Japan House. I know that you love sushi, so that is where you and I are going to dine tonight. Jay. PS turn around.”
Turning around, Kix squealed in joy as she threw herself into Jason’s arms crying. “JAY!, You are so dead!!! I can’t believe that you would do something like this to me! I love you!”
“And that Hannah, is the reason why I couldn’t go on our date last night. Jason wanted to surprise me for our anniversary, and he sure as hell did. I do hope that you will forgive me for yesterday. You do? Thanks! Hannah, I have to go, Jay is wanting to go for a walk and wants me to go with him. Talk later bye!”
