It's best to remember that this is a type of "monster" that effects a person's state of mind. The horror of this is that if the thing you're fighting has the ability to drive you insane at a whim... what possible retaliation is open to you?

Also, nice touch on the Special Forces dudes. Not only does one having his ears exposed make sense, it's a dandy way to tell them apart.
