I don't get it either, but "Sex" is used both as an noun, and as a verb. That's why when you apply on some kind of sheet that asks if you are a male or female it won't have the word "gender" but instead, it'll just say "Sex: male___ Female___".
That's why it's just as correct to say that another person is of the opposite sex as you, meaning that they're not what gender you are.
it's my understanding that it's possible that "Gender" was created as a word possibly as to not use "sex" for the same task in our vocabulary. since us americans are apparently sensitive about the use of words that hint toward sexual things.
