Some species of poison dart frogs develop their toxicity from their diet - certain insects and mites secrete nasty stuff that the frogs then concentrate in their own bodies. When the toxic bugs are removed from their diet, the frogs can lose toxicity and become safe to handle.
Not all frog poisons kill. Some secrete powerful hallucinogens.
