Just saw the animation test for Genndy Tatakovsky’s “Popeye” movie. YES. VERY YES!! (stuffs a pair of Chromecasts into his eyeballs to get the images to his brain faster)
Animator’s rant: After a long time of seriously fucking up to conversion from 2-d to 3d, it seems like the animation industry has finally stopped trying to fit classic 2d into the Pixar mould. It seems to be happening at the same as the studios are flexing their muscles with the artistic possibilities of 3d. The Lego Movie animated 3d models using frame-by-frame to simulate stop motion, Blue Sky’s Peanuts movie is doing a lot of hard work to make the 3d models move and look like the classic animated tv specials.
And now Popeye.
The models are gorgeous, and the way they move is _brilliant_. I don’t think I’ve had an artgasm like this since watching General Grevious fighting the Jedi in Tartakovsky’s original 2d clone wars shorts.
/Nerd out.
