...BOOM!

So Microsoft bought Minecraft... not the company that made it, nor the programmers behind it, just Minecraft itself. For 2.5 billion. And they expect they will make that money back from the property by spring of next year...

elmind

He announced his leaving sooner I think. Something about "Eh, don't want make games to be huge success, I was happy with Ludum Dare things"

microsoft bought mojang. not minecraft. that means they own minecraft, as well as scrolls, and cobalt. (mojangs other two games)

the three founders of mojang are leaving the company.
it is not confirmed whether the rest of the staff are staying or leaving.
Draccy
10 years, 3 months ago
Actually the staff posted in a collective blog that the majority of them aren't going anywhere.
Jeb and Dinnerbone are both sticking around to see how things are going to go.
They have all also assured everyone that things won't change, community interaction will still be there, and the game on other platforms is up to those companies, not Microsoft.

to specify, the three founders: Notch, Carl, and Jakob, are leaving.
Draccy

Yea, your last statement was 'not confirmed if the rest of the staff are staying or leaving'
And I was commenting that from my knowledge, its confirmed they aren't.
Aside from the three bosses.

I've never seen staff/the old company say that anything will change going forward in events like this. It's a shame it's rarely true though.

Considering that Notch's only input seems to be 'make it less fun' and Jeb always listens to that, I see no real loss. Now, if the -rest- of the team leaves, we're in for some bad times.

The do not expect to make $2.5bil in 6 months, they expect to break even in GAAP terms in 6 months.

That means they expect the value of "Mojang + sales + merch" to exceed the taxes/paper-filling/contract-lawyer costs in 6 months.

No one knows that yet, it might be ok, or it will go horrible wrong. For now it would just be a wait and see kind of thing. It's their move first.

It's a meh game really. INSANELY over-hyped and just... isn't fun anymore. I feel sorry for Yogscast really, I mean they still play that game TODAY and some of them must be sick of it. Microsoft buying it doesn't really mean it's downfall, though I can see it getting DLC. Another thing I can see (the chances are VERY low though) is.... Minecraft 2: Xbox One [EXCLUSIVE]

Which I don't really care cuz PC gamer lel <3 :3c~

You know I had that same thought when the news was going around?
"Nothing is going to happen, it'll all be fine."
Next day: "Today Microsoft brings the announcement of Minecraft 2."

I think it'll bring forth more of the texture packs for the Microsoft group. Maybe a Gears one? haha, oh man...that'd be sad.

Xbox players won't have anything to worry about. But what about us PS3 players? It took forever to Minecraft to come to the PSN as it is. And I highly doubt now that Microsoft owns Minecraft, that it will be ported to the PSN.
Yasashi
10 years, 3 months ago
Dude, there's already a PS3 version of Minecraft available. And the PS4 version is set for October 8th I believe. And I don't think Microsoft can terminated that contract.
DarkAngel1986
10 years, 3 months ago
I'm aware of the PS3 version. I just said it took forever for there to be a PS3 version. I was referring to the news about Minecraft 2 and that if Microsoft now owns the rights to Minecraft, Minecraft 2 won't have port for the PSN.
Yasashi

Well...it's gonna be a Microsoft made sequel to Minecraft....so would it really be worth it anyways? :P
DarkAngel1986

Good point. But then I'd have to make the complaint that they'd be ruining the Minecraft franchise.
elmind

Or not. Microsoft could tell them to dump Java for something more stable.
Zarphus

ultimately im pretty sure this means minecraft wont see many major changes whatsoever. in fact, it probably means no new updates at all. instead, M$ will want to refocus the developers talents in another direction.

probably a bad one.

so, you can probably still enjoy minecraft.

Should the Creepers' faces now have the red ring of death, or should the Xbox's red ring of death be replaced by a Creeper's face?

Great, simply great... I can see this game, fanbase and everything of what made this game stand out as a gem fall, crash and burn. This isn't simple a good thing, this is just JUST like when Activision bought Universial.. It was a disaster and we still reek of the shit they put out these days.

I will never look at notch the same way, he is a coward to be afraid of progress in the terms of having his game expand. You can't predict the future that is for sure and tell how big something will become. But that is what being a game developer is about, to share your creation with the world and have others enjoy it. Selling out because you no longer want to be apart of that, it is the lowest move anyone can ever make.

When working under microsoft, The game will not be the original vision of what mojang intended. It will not carry what the player wants but what will bring them the most profit.

I call to petition the stop to this buy out...

People see the news and they just think its the end of the world. No one here has probably gone to the Mojang blog, or checked dev twitters to understand the full scope. Notch's stepping down is a little reasonable. He wanted to make small, enjoyable games, and he doesn't want the pressure coming from owning what has now become next level. Not sure what the word is on the other two bosses, I'll have to check that out.

On the dev team side of things, pretty much everyone is going to stay there. I think Microsoft might be smart with this one. I'm sure they know if they restrict the game, mess too much with internal workings, or what have you, the player base will shrink even more.

Notch hasn't been involved with MC for a while now as far as I'm aware. As for the development side of things, I can see MC giving a lot more preference to the game on their consoles (Updates a while before, optimisations for their consoles etc), that's not to say I think they'll leave the PC/Sony versions to die, just that they'll have a lower priority.

As I said earlier, I've never seena  takeover where the company hasn't said "Don't worry, nothing will change.", but something will change, just might not be huge.

And Micro$oft will probably try to "fix it," just as they did to Skype. I never got into Minecraft... and now I never will. :(

Next up MineCraft MMORPG with a main storyline, advanced creativeness, side quests, full world exploration like that of skyrim, HD graphics, a leveling system, multiplayer enabled for XBOX One and Live, Full Voice Actors with subtitled available, DL content, a creator pack. While I admit that would be awesome I dont see it happening. But I'd certainly give it a try. and btw "F You miscrosoft" lol...

*lights a candle* lament the death of a very potential-full program. lament the soon to be binary blob of minecraft. no longer cross platform and community building, no longer open for modification. expect slowdowns, limited bug fixes and the death of a great and truely unique entertainment experience.

I dreamed of a MC shell where a whole computer could have been scripted and laid out with blocks. but now i dont know if i believe its possable.

bless notch, may he see his true profit from MC was the rich community of players and creators. v.v

Microsoft probably isn't even doing this to make money off of Minecraft itself. They're probably just trying to make up for lost money because of the suckiness of Windows 8. I mean, what were they thinking putting a tablet's OS on a PC? If I want a tablet, I'll get a tablet. But when I want a PC, I don't want a tablet that's calling itself a PC.

A rose by any other name is just as sweet...but if you call a daffodil a rose, it doesn't make it a rose.

Exactly. I had the Xbox one in mind as well when I made that comment. But I didn't want to offend any Xbox fans. But it's not their fault that Microsoft are idiots. There's a reason why they're called "micro soft"

"Are you sure you wish to explode?"
[YES] -> "no response..." *pling* "Explosion.exe has stopped working."

Anyway, people are all worried, but let's see what happens. Notch stopped working on Minecraft some time ago, leaving it to others. He prefers staying small, fine with me, if that's what he wants. About Microsoft, let's see what happens. I hope they know that Minecraft became what it is today because it was available on so many platforms and the players were included in the ongoing creation process. If MS changes anything about that, Minecraft will loose popularity fast. Hey, maybe they even manage to rid some of the bugs and make it more performant.
