This kitty has a taste for paws! Just look at the way it licks that fur, tongue slowly moving along the paw's length....mhm hmmm....
I've no idea how this drawing was born. It seems ahead of its time. I'm not skilled with shading. I barely know how to work with light and values, yet somehow this happened. I drew this after I came back from my easter vacation. The sketch took me a very scarce amount of time, hinting at a quick project. After ten minutes or so, I erased any unnecessary lines and came face to face with the lineart. It looked good enough. An outline kitty on a snowy field, ready to be touched and stroked in so many ways by my long, black pencil.
Details started piling up, and I slowly realized. This wasn't as quickly as I expected. No, I wanted more. I felt the urge to draw even the tiny details such as short furs, but after a few attempts I gave up. At that time I considered rushing the damn thing, but I didn't have it in me. Everything looked too accurate, too pristine.
So I decided to take things slow. The head took me around 1,5 hours to complete. It was somewhat of an ordeal as I drew and erased, erased and drew again. Then came that tongue, AND the paw. These two are intertwined. If you mess up one, you automatically mess up the other. Adding details to the tongue and finishing that paw went painstakingly slow.I think I invested an hour in the paw only. Cats have no visible claws and the fingers are well concealed by fur, so that was 'fun' to draw...
The rest of the body was, sadly, rushed. I began losing my patience with this supposed-to-be-quick, done and gone drawing. I blocked in the major shadow shapes, tried giving a sense of depth however I could, and ignored any hopes of drawing those fiendish fur strings.
By the time I finished the drawing, I was tired. Even when looking at the finish project I thought I could've done better. This wasn't a sense of accomplishment and victory I was feeling, but the bitter taste of imperfection. So what did I do? I realized I'm being a bastard, popped some epic music, and stared at the finished piece, listing all the things I've done right.
There were way more than I anticipated...
So there you have it, guys. One of my best drawings, courtesy to Yogoloth. After talking tongues and licking with him, I couldn't leave him hanging. Temptation can be a heavy burden :p.
Oh, and yes. This drawing was made to prove a point. I couldn't touch a pencil for 4 days while I was gone, so I wanted to see if the rumors were true. If artists really lose their skill if they don't keep going at it.
Are the rumors true? I'll let you be the judges of that.
