It tells us that Major Tom lost in space during the experiment. According to David Bowie's second and last song about Major Tom, he wasn't a space traveller or what - he was just addicted to narcotics.
I don't like that ending. So I've got alternative ending, where he starved to death in a broken spaceship.
Much more romantic, isn't it?..
