You're right, it drives you mad sometimes with early toons, in terms of consistency. Like with Betty Boop's ears! But it does mean that we have more leeway with art that we draw today. :-)

Yeah I hear ya both on that, Ortensia needs a tail cause she IS a cat, one without a tail is like losing a part of them, like it doesn't look like a cat and like some kind of tailless fox or a wingless bat. Cartoons from the early 30's always so confusing but dang right funny and weird most of the time in my opinion.

Next time I draw her.... Forget that! For now on she has a tail!  ^ v ^

The Manx cat is tail-less, and it may be a form of caudal regression*, hence bladder and bowel problems, and spinal cord defects, not to mention the hopping gait. The gene is lethal when not paired with a normal gene, so breeding requires selecting for tail-less or stumpytail individuals.

Cats have been genetically damaged because breeding for selected points was done before Mendel discovered genes. Hence some breeds like produce monstrosities (cyclops, disarranged faces, absense of brain...)

* The most familiar expression of caudal regression in humans is fusion of the legs - sirenomelia. Bladder and rectum are absent. Most are stillborn or die in a few days - fortunantly. I apologize for blowing my own horn again.

No, it's cool. Your logic has sum it up of what kind of cat Ortensia is.

Oswald's girl was a cat, because the creative team was edgy about her being a rabbit.
Rabbits were seen as symbols of lust, like goats & sparrows (and pigs symbolized gluttony.
