...And among the villains AND ponies of MLP, King Sombra is my hero!
If Discord is John De Lancie, King Sombra would have to be Benedict Cumberbatch. What makes him stand out from other My Little Pony villains is his quality of accomplishment. Sombra conquered an empire; he made ponies shudder just to hear his name; he outsmarted the two most powerful princesses; and he set traps even the smartest pony would trot headlong into 1000 years later. How accomplishing is that, compared to most villains we've seen, in animation anyway?
For those unaware King Sombra is based directly off of Sauron from The Lord of the Rings. And honestly, that's the thing regarding him that bothers me. He's based TOO directly off Sauron. King Sombra is a sorcerer versed in dark magic, and a conqueror. They should have built on those characteristics which Celestia's flashback established in The Crystal Empire - Part I; not have the mere term "Sauron reference" write him in for them, let him end up having practically no bearing on the story, and then kill him off within 1 whole episode.
Also, a fly on the wall told me Meghan didn't even like King Sombra. Doesn't it just boggle the mind to see a writer squander her own villain's potential?!
Bottom line, King Sombra is among my favorite villains not just in MLP, but all time. He had the potential to be something even better, though, and yet the writers just wasted it by having him do practically nothing, threaten practically nothing, and then just kill him off. For that, I say down with the official canon, and up with head canon!
