Jewel has actually never met either of her uncles, but if she did, I imagine it'd go something like this.

Gay as a 2$ bill doesn't make sense. "Queer" is the word, because queer was slang for "weird, strange, different".  Hence, that's as "strange" as a 2$ bill.  Although, the expression is 3$ bill, because 2$ bills actually exist, as were printed during america's bicentennial.

"Gay as a $2 bill" is the saying. I realize what gay actually means, and I realize that $2 bills actually exist, but that's the saying. Sorry.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fake_denominations_of_Uni...   "In the first decade of the 21st century, gay rights groups encouraged supporters to print obviously-fake $3 bills, called "Queer Dollars""

it's difficult to find specific references on turns of phrase like that, so i'm going to drop out as i don't really believe that wikipedia is 100% reliable.  "queer as a 3$ bill" is the turn of phrase that i've heard almost constantly for my 22 years of life, though.

"Gay as a $2/$3 bill" is the one I've heard for my 19 years of life. Either way this is a phenomenal nitpick over something that really doesn't matter or need correcting! Congrats on that.

Sorry, I'm in training to be a teacher and I'm trained to nitpick when people don't use the english language correctly.  I apologize for letting that leak into my online interactions.

No harm done, I guess. But I'm pretty sure there are multiple versions of the saying, 'cause I've always heard it "gay as a $2 bill" around where I live. Maybe it's a regional thing.

Probably is.  If you don't mind, I'd ask what region your dialect is from, to sate my personal curiosity.

I didn't know bills were sentient and could have attractions to other bills.

Smart-assery aside, I love the pic.
