Experiment: Think of a classic comic from the newspapers and try to draw it without looking at the source. Fully by memory. Try to approximate the style of the art and writing as much as you can. Or do it the way you remember it...

Well, I did not know what Marmaduke is, but I think you as an artist should have rather good visual memory, so your depiction must give a right impression. I know so much things not by their origin but only by fan art and other web buzz...

(oh but I have problems with that - memory, I mean - I always mess the things up even for objects I must've seen tons of times, so need to consult the references constantly)

Actually this reminds me of a work by Redon (works like -the Monster views all with horror) depicting a foul idol god worshipped by degenerate subhumans.
