I never got B&K for the 64, but I got some points on my 360 and finally got it and have been enjoying it, and I love kazooie even more, but still feel banjo is an airhead x3
I always felt Banjo was an airhead. I never got B&K for the 64, but I got some points on my 360 and
i think he's meant to be, ya. they're just stereotypes and nothing else in the games, after all. so i try to give them deeper characters that still allow them to act the way they do in the games most of the time. so this banjo is pretty simple, but he's also reliable and practical, traits that paint a broader picture of someone who grew up on a farm and is responsible for his little sister without precluding the airhead personality he has in the games. anyone can seem dumb when they're unwilling to respond to the situation or treat it like it's overly complicated, but it doesn't mean they're not thinking about it. so banjo's just this stable, quiet guy who takes life as it comes and doesn't get caught up in his own feelings. i think plenty of people in real life are like that.
i guess the characterization in this comic was okay. but kit and i plan to revisit banjo-kazooie a ways down the line after this comic is done and tell a truly meaningful tale. look forward to it! =3

thank you = ) i'm glad. it's likely that people are weighing the good parts of the comic more heavily than i am. artists tend to see only the problems with their own stuff.
these are my problems with it:
a. confusion: i didn't realize until five pages in that kazooie being shunned because of her red feathers wasn't enough to make most people hate her/have her need defending--especially in banjo's town, which isn't nearly as religious as her home town. so the comic is unsure as to whether she was hated for religious reasons or because breegulls are a lower class.
b. bad pacing: the plot was massively, massively rushed. i personally find it very hard to tell short stories, and the natural page limits that comics must have so that they aren't being drawn for decades again (like in DYO) encouraged me to try to tell too much story. kit and i have a new strategy for handling this in the future.
c. lack of focus: compiled on top of (b), this what really kills it for me. even with the few plot hooks that actually get followed (like the implied abuse at the orphanage), they don't get addressed in a meaningful way. the abuse was supposed to be the catalyst that changed kazooie from a shy, respectful girl to an outgoing one who only relied on her self-confidence. it was supposed to be the thing that would finally make her realize that everything that had been happening to her her whole life was bullshit, that no one should have to live like that. unfortunately, we didn't see enough of her young life to really feel her getting picked on; we didn't have any complicated emotions over the death of her father because we never got to see much of his life like him actually preaching, defending kazooie, or being sick; we didn't see her struggling to resist being beaten in the orphanage; and we didn't see her give any opinion at all on sexual abuse, not even an uninformed one. even more importantly, her claim that she wants to fall in love falls flat because we never saw her wish that before. nor do we have any guarantee that she knows what love or sex is.
d. feelz/drama: every emotion in this story is too heavy. we just go from one shocking event to another like in a television soap, and there's none of the contrast with normal events that makes deep ones hit home. nor is it subtle in any way. i personally just hate stories that do that, and here i've ended up writing one. i'm almost ashamed of myself.
i've said this before many times: scripts are way, way harder for me than prose. it has been intensely frustrating knowing how to tell an awesome story and not being able to make it happen here.
by the way, the "strategy" i mentioned in (b) was, from now on, kit's going to storyboard everything himself, and i'm going to edit it. furthermore, he's going to come up with the plot lines for the shorter, focused comics we do so as to guarantee they're tied in with the artwork as best as possible--then i'll tweak them. these comics will be regular, fairly generic doujinshi-style things--but solid.
we'll also be doing -much- longer comics that i'll write in prose first then kit will translate into comics, having me check his storyboards for accuracy. these comics will probably be 100+ pages long and not heavy on sex while his will be short and heavy on sex. we'll probably get 10 of his done in the time it takes to get 1 of mine done--but we'll be doing them concurrently, running them at the same time; and people will have the option of which to donate to. put more directly, he'll try to hook people with sex, and i'll try to hook people with story. mine will still have nice, explicit sex; but it'll take a backseat to the story; while his stories will be made around the sex.
yet still, in both types, we continually aim to prove that a good story and hot sex aren't mutually exclusive in a work. i hate stuff that's -either- artsy or hot (not both), and it bugs me to no end that that duality even exists in the public understanding.

Wouldn't a kiss in town give them more trouble? Maybe he actually did a smart thing .. without telling Kazooie :/ .. idk, guess we'll have to wait and see.

Man I'm loving this comic. This brings me back to the good old days of N64. Which are now dirty thanks to this, but hey you still managed to make Kazooie hot!
Now if we could only get Rare back to Nintendo.........

Actually, the honey perpetually stays there throughout being in the same level, even when entering another room and exiting again. Go into Mumbo's mountain and defeat an enemy, and leave the honeycomb there. Then go into Mumbo's Skull or the termite mound, exit, and go to it,and the honeycomb will still be there.

And here comes the sexual tension leading up to either sex or seperation. It's still possible to go either way, even though it's probably going to be sex.
