Meet Dr. Langston Albright. Raised by a minister in the 1930s with strong moral values, in 1945 he fell into the waters of Freedom City harbor, sinking into the darkness. There in the depths, he felt a light rise out to surround him and fill him. He burst from the water, aglow with this new power. Deciding to use newfound powers of light control to become a superhero, Beacon the master of light, and joined the post-war Liberty League.
From his own studies and work with fellow legacy hero the Scarab, Beacon learned his power was part of a prophecy about a "champion of light" who would combat the forces of darkness in the world. Throughout his long career, Beacon ended up battling many "Dark Forces", including Nachtkrieger and SHADOW, the hell-worshipping legions of DEMON, the Unspeakable One-worshipping Serpents of COIL, and many Dark-manipulating villains. Even after his public career as Beacon ended in the late 50s, Albright continued the fight against eldritch evil behind the scenes.
Finding a measure of wealth and fame from writing about his heroic exploits and public appearances, he channeled this wealth into creating the Albright institute, dedicated to increase understanding about superhumans, both to aid in his personal battles against evil, and to find a suitable successor to his position. He believed he found such a contender in the 60s with Leroy Conte, aka the Golden Shell, a turtle with both flying brick and light manipulation powers. Unfortunately, the Golden Shell was embittered against Mammal-dominated society after the death of Reptile Equality activist Martin Luther King-Snake, and this came to a head in a battle with Mammal Supremacist Vigilante White Logos, who was targeting another reptile activist. When White Logos tried to use innocent bystanders to cover his escape, Golden Shell lost it and killed the vigilante on national television. While Leroy instantly regretted his actions and submitted himself to the authorities out of respect for the law, this act of murder horribly tainted his soul, sadly making him ineligible for the position of Light-Bearer, forcing Langston to continue looking.
Now in his 80s, Albright is surprisingly spry for his age (being the Light-Bearer has some benefits), although his fur has gone completely white with age. Still, he does believe he's found the true candidate for the rank of Champion of Light, in the person of young heroine Seraph. He has become her mentor, adding his own special regimen of training to her regular Curriculum at Claremont.
