Tolkein's elves were created. Elwe was one of those who had no parents, but was created. Thanks to Morgoth's meddling, many elves were killed and some, worse, were mutated into - orcs. But the elves in the long run migrated to Valinor and middle-earth became less for all that.

Tolkein did not create elves. Their history goes way back in almost all cultures. For example the elves of the Rhineland go back to a norse myth about a race of giants who were supposed to guard favored sailors from crashing on the rocks.
according to the legend one of them fell asleep and a favorite son died when his ship sank. The giants were then no longer favored by the norse gods and since they were all male, they mated with the souls of dead women. this meant that the average height of the norse elves was 18 feet for males and 11 feet for the females. It accounted for the extremely pale and thin features as well. check out a book called "The vanishing people" by Katherine Briggs.
