Introducing Jess and Beckett!  You already know Raven, of course.  She's all grown up.  Jess first appeared as her boyfriend in my short story Occult Fertility, and young Beckett is the result of that story.  At this point, Jess and Raven have been happily married since before Beckett was born about five years prior.

Jess is into the occult, as is Raven.  Beckett is a mute autistic, and also tends to share his parents interests.

This turned out so well.  Malachyte made Beckett so adorable with his little glare.  Jess looks pretty cute, too, and Raven looks lovely.  Just an awesome piece. ^_^

Physically mute or psychologically mute?

Just saying that an autistic kid who can't talk wouldn't be considered "high-functioning" if his voice box was functional.

Psychologically mute.

I said "high-functioning" because that's what I am, though I'm not mute.  I don't know what level of autism would coincide with muteness, but I'm basically thinking that he's high-functioning other than the muteness.

I asked someone with a psychology background if someone can be high-functioning and also be mute, and he didn't really know.  So I honestly don't have much insight into it.  All I know is that he's not on the level of autism where he's repeatedly moving his extremities or rocking back and forth and all that.

Yes, high-functioning and mute can happen, and has been reported on multiple occasions - typically, the traits that make them more outstanding are shown through digital or written communication. Others are partially mute, etc.

Aside for being mute, the other descriptions seem to portray him as having a mild case, although the mute side suggests a more extreme case.

I'm a psychology student with an interest in the ASD side of things, after being told I have it myself years ago, and being part of a youtube documentary about it a few years back.

I was about to make a rather crude comment about parental spanking, but when I noticed that the boy is autistic, I don't think that would be appropriate.
