here is the basic hat I've made for my steampunk cowboy hat

I started with a sheet of faux leather I had sitting around and cut two round circles that would become the brim. I them measured the circumference of my head where I wanted the had to sit. I cut two equal lengths that would become the crown of the hat. I sewed those into a snug loop and tested them for fit. I pinned that to the brim and marked out the inner circle. since I wanted a stiff brim I also took a plastic for sale sign and cut it slightly smaller on the outer edge and larger on the interior circle. Not exactly in period but what the hell. I then started sewing. Working arround the brim of the has sewing the top and bottom pieces together. halfway through I slipped in the plastic sheet, and finished sewing the brim, I then took the crown and triple stitched it to the inner edge of the brim, Finally I used one of the pieces cut from the blank brims and sewed that onto the top of the crown.

its a long process sewing by hand, but I don't think its half bad as my first ever hat.

I'm planning on cleaning up the brim, adding a hat bands, I'm thinking barb wire strung with bird skulls, and possibly getting some dark brown shoe polish to stain the hat with... what do you think?

A hat band always adds personality to a hat. And warns people about the wearer's personality. Just to tie an outfit together, the hat, boots and belt should be similar shades. So pick your dyes when you have the set.

true.   Errr man I hadn't even thought about boots I will need cowboy boots....  not something I can make.   A belt though that I can make....  Hmmm  steam punk cowboy should be leather.  probably could get real leather for that for the strength.  and since its a advanced steam design I'll use a snap buckle.  will also nee to mod a steam maverick...  Actualy a sweet revenge or hammer shot might be better cowboy guns.  Mavericks look more 40k to me...

I found an easy way to make the barb wire too for the hatbands

Among other things Western footwear included brogans, ankle-high shoes with gaiters. Here are some on E-bay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-Vintage-WWI-and-WWII-Spats-L... They are tan wool but could be dyed to match a pair of shoes you have on hand. Excellent if you've traded your oat-burner for a coal-burner. Or a ghostrock-burner. ( "How do you sleep at night?" "Bank the fire. You can barely hear the whimpering from the grate." )

you know thinking about that I could use the gaiters with my leather boots.  If I do it right they would even work well for my cyborg costume.

thats a good deal too... might even have a pair of shoes that would fit that... hope I still have them

*shivers*  man if ghost rock boilers fueled by the souls of the damned weren't bad enough eventualy they make irradiated ghost rock nukes...

Yeah. I read the Deadlands books including some of the future stuff. And I always thought 40K was the downer game of all time. Holding back the Long Night always makes for good adventures, but the ultimate end never seems to be alterable.

I know what you mean.  The reckoners can't lose...  hell even when they do they cheat to make sure they still win

but thats a good point I can't decide which future is worse  deadlands, or 40k  both are pretty bad....   hell who's to say they arn't the same universe,  reckoners and chaos could be the same thing with different names and

I've played and read more Warhammer, fantasy and SF, than Deadlands. Back in the 80s I threw together a RPG loosely based on 40K. I finally had to create a separate minor galaxy well clear of the Empire to make it playable. They had a decent tech level and mental shields based on Gellar technology. Chaos still called for SAN rolls but no one automatically went mad. No Astartes but power armor was not relic tech. There were Mechanicus cults since they predate the Age Of Strife. But no Imperial cult. Psychers were just another character class, although there were dangers. Orks and Eldar were opposition and rarely allies. And both were rare except on the fringes. All in all a more laid-back setting.

ever hear of Brighthammer 40k
http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Brighthammer_40,000_%282nd_edi...

I myself came across Deadlands first, I had heard of 40k (by the original space hulk computer game) but it wasn't till I came across Dawn of War, and Dark crusade did I start reading up on it...  Even though they brutal sociopaths I still love da Orks

Thanks for the link. That is going to take some time to read but it looks like something I would enjoy. By the way, speaking of alternate 40K worlds here's one of my fave webcomics, Exterminatus Now - http://exterminatusnow.co.uk/

To my mind the Orks were the purest, simplest souls in 40K. Their motives were straightforward. Their methods were brutal but without sadism.

I was already following exterminatus now but its such a cool comic... sadly no orks so far

I'm thinking of when I do test films for my prop guns I'm going to use digital insert some of the warhammer 40k game models I have stored up from the old freedom force model archive I have.

Vaporizing Marines wouldn't seem right  and neither would Tau...  I truely see them of the lesser of all evils,  though maybe a piece of hardware I need to find my model library
