This is one of my favorite illustrations from a book project I did in my Typography II class earlier this year. We had to take a text, and create a small book of just the first few pages of the first couple of chapters. So I ran with the idea of creating an interesting sort of journal with the short story The Call of Cthulhu, and got to do lots of fun little digital sketches for it.

This one, of course, is a big angry Cthulhu being all awesome in the title pages.

It was NOT the Call of Cthulhu that set me on the trail of Lovecraft's Great Old Ones, but, rather the mythos tale "The Colour out of Space". I first saw that in a scifi anthology in my town library back in the 60's. It eclipsed the stories preceding and following it in the book.

I next saw it in a now gone supermarket in Middletown, NY, and there was also in the collection THE CALL OF CTHULHU, as well as other marvels and shocks by Lovecraft. I bought the Lancer paperback. Later also the DUNWICH HORROR another Lovecraft collection. As time wore on, the stubborn tendency of these Lancer books for the binding to come apart, drove me to buy the sturdy Arkham House hardbacks.
